Charles Darwin wrote a book called
The Descent of Man In Selection in Relation to Sex
, which was originally released in 1871. It describes his sexual selection theory, a type of biological adaptation that differs from natural selection yet is tied to it.Outlining how similar humans are to other animals is Darwin's strategy for supporting the evolution of people. He starts by drawing parallels between the anatomical structures, emphasizing body composition, embryology, and "rudimentary organs" that are presumed to have had a purpose in one of man's "pre-existing" forms.Darwin argued that there is no fundamental distinction between the intellectual, moral, and anatomical capacities of humans and those of other animals. Based on anthropology published since 1860, he assigned a hierarchical ranking to all aspects of life and extended it to include human races. The Sexes Throughout Nature, written by Antoinette Brown Blackwell and published in 1875, served as the foundation for Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. One of the first female critics of evolutionary theory, Blackwell said that it denied women their proper role in society. The majority of Descent is devoted to the discussion of sexual selection, which Darwin believed to be as important a theoretical contribution as his work on natural selection.
Miles Franklin wrote "
My Brilliant Career
," a novel, in 1901. She (Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, 1879-1954) was one of the foremost Australian authors of her period, publishing a number of novels after this one as her debut. When she was still a teenager, she wrote this novel as a romantic comedy for her friends' amusement. Franklin gave Henry Lawson the book, who added a preface and sent it to his own publishers in Edinburgh. Franklin experienced a great deal of distress as a result of the book's popularity in Australia and the perception that many of the characters resembled her own family and her life as a small farmer in New South Wales close to Goulburn. Franklin decided to delay the book's release until after her passing. In "My Brilliant Career," novel, Sybylla, an independent young girl growing up in early 20th-century Australia, tells her story. In order to keep her independence, Sybylla declines the chance to marry a wealthy young guy. She is forced to accept a position as a governess for a local family since her father owes them money. This well-known Australian author's first romance book is titled "My Brilliant Career." Through this interesting novel, Sybylla has become the epitome of an Aussie battler!
I Did Not Get a Chance to Say Bye
- A gently heartbreaking tale, And Now Good-bye (1931) foreshadows the tone, features, and storyline that may be found in James Hilton's more well-known novels, like Goodbye, Mr. Chips, and Lost Horizon (published in 1933 and 1934, respectively). The London-Manchester train struck a wagon that had strayed onto the main line from a siding on that chilly November morning, which was dazzling with sunshine and covered the fields in a light dusting of snow. The engine and the first two coaches derailed; cinders that were thrown from the debris started a fire that killed 14 people in the first coach. Sadly, some were not immediately slain. It was odd that there were still two burned bodies of women, both utterly unaccounted for, even after all the identities of those who might have been on that specific train on that particular morning had been gathered and scrutinized. But the book's mournful beauty is more about the atmosphere than what actually occurs. It is, unfortunately, what does not occur. As with Howat's intimidating sister-in-law, who has "a threatening optimism that was not quite matched by a sense of humor," he expertly evokes his minor characters in one or two telling existences.
The Red Record
tabulates these instances of cruelty in clear, impartial figures. Ida B. Wells' original goal for the brochure was to humiliate and shock the lethargic public-and spur change-alongside the total by describing actual instances of lynching and listing the common justifications for these arbitrary executions. The practice of lynching was so pervasive in the postbellum American South that the majority of Southern politicians and leaders chose to ignore it. This lethal brand of vigilante "justice" was really a thinly veiled racist justification for homicidal brutality. With charges ranging from "attempted stock poisoning" to "insulting whites," more than 200 African Americans were killed in 1892 alone. In order to let the dreadful statistics speak for themselves. The anti-lynching movement in the US was led by investigative journalist and activist Ida B. Wells, later Wells-Barnett. A Red Record used mainstream white newspapers to document a resurgence of white mob violence, building on her ground-breaking exposé Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases (1892), and discovered that more than 9,000 African Americans had been killed by lynching in the South between 1864 and 1894. The novel aimed to make space for one aspect of a crucial discussion about power, violence, and race in the US.
In 1915, W. Somerset Maugham released a book titled "
Of Human Bondage
." It follows Philip Carey's growth as his sadomasochistic fixation takes over his life. Although he declared, "This is a novel, not an autobiography; though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure imagination," the novel is widely regarded as Maugham's finest and to be heavily autobiographical. The title of Maugham's book, which he had first intended to entitle Beauty from Ashes, was ultimately chosen from a passage in Spinoza's Ethics. Of Human Bondage was selected No. 66 by The Modern Library among the top 100 English-language books of the 20th century. In the novel, Philip Carey develops into an impressionable young man with a ravenous hunger for knowledge and adventure from a tormented orphan with a clubfoot. At the age of 18, his cravings lead him to Paris to try his hand at art before returning to London to pursue a career in medicine. But even so, nothing can quench his persistent thirst for knowledge. Then he experiences an obsessional love affair and starts a catastrophic relationship that will alter his life for the worst. He gives up looking for happiness and chooses to accept his lot.
The Virgin and the Gipsy
'', written as a brief fiction titled by English novelist D.H. Lawrence, was posthumously released in 1930. Due to the spelling of "Gipsy" in the original and early editions, the title The Virgin and the Gypsy that is used today can be confusing. The novel includes Two sisters, daughters of an Anglican vicar, who return from finishing school overseas to a drab, lifeless East Midlands rectory. Their mother has run off with another man and their father is deeply humiliated. Yvette sees her father as a mean-spirited and cowardly person for the first time. The book's conclusion has a shocking turn of events. A huge flood surges through the vale, coming from a burst dam at a nearby reservoir. In the nick of time, the brave gipsy man rescues Yvette despite the fact that the flood washes most of the rectory away. The gipsy man represents male sexuality as well as individual freedom. Lawrence saw himself as a liberator for people who needed to experience life without fear or shame. Yvette is like the reincarnation of her mother's rebellious nature as she yearns for freedom.
The Way We Live Now
'' is a satirical book titled by Anthony Trollope, which was first serialized before being published in London in 1875. One of the last important Victorian books to be published in monthly installments is this one. With 100 chapters, the book is Trollope's longest and has a tone of interesting subplots. It was influenced by the early 1870s financial scandals; Trollope had recently returned from overseas and was horrified by the greed and dishonesty they exposed. He was chastised by this book. ''The Way We Live Now'', a satire of the London literary scene in the nineteenth century and a forceful critique of the increasing influence of speculative finance in English life, is regarded by modern critics as Trollope's greatest book. It portrayed how avarice and dishonesty permeated that era's political, social, moral, and intellectual life. In order to secure a fortune, Felix Carbury, the beloved son of the author Lady Carbury, is persuaded to propose marriage to Augustus Mel motte's daughter, a French conman and rascal. One of Trollope's greatest satirical accomplishments is his portrayal of Lady Carbury, who is impulsive, unprincipled, and unwaveringly committed to her own self-promotion.
Wisdom of the East
is a classic Buddhist novel created by Shinran Shonin and later, translated by S.Yamabe And L. Adams Beck. It is a peculiar fact that, despite the fact that many of the earlier Buddhist Scriptures have been translated by qualified scholars, the later Buddhist devotional writings have received relatively little attention, despite the fact that the development of Buddhism in China and Japan has made them of particular interest as a reflection of the spiritual outlook of those two enormous nations. The Wisdom of the East is a book written by S. Yamabe and L. Adams Beck. Its meaning can be found wherever the human heart shines with love' - B. Alan Wallace, author of "Buddhism with an Attitude: The Tibetan Seven-Point Mind-Training". For more than a half-century, the spiritual philosophies of the East - from India to Japan, from yoga to Buddhism - have influenced our lives in the West. Leading teachers, authors, and practitioners of the main spiritual traditions with roots in Asia are among the fifty authors in this captivating anthology who share their favorite teaching tales and poems as well as the lessons they learned from them. This combination brings together simple 'turning words' and the sustaining, practical insights they inspire.
Stendhal wrote a book titled
The Charterhouse of Parma
, which was first published in 1839. The Charterhouse of Parma chronicles the adventures of Fabrice del Dongo from his birth in 1798 to his death.Field Marshal Ney's guard is momentarily joined by Fabrice, who then encounters the man who could be his father. While Gina works to have Fabrice released, the Prince of Parma plans to lock him up for a period of twelve years. Fabrice, meantime, is content with his life as a result of his love for Clélia Conti, the commandant's daughter. Gina, Countess Mosca, marries Count Mosca but leaves him for Count Fabrice since she had always loved Fabrice. After 14 months of misery for both of them, she consents to visit him every night, provided that it is in the dark, lest she violates her promise to the Madonna to never see him again and bear the consequences of her transgression. She gives birth to Fabrice's kid a year later, and the pair pretend the baby died so Fabrice wouldn't perish. In less than a year after retiring to a Carthusian monastery, Fabrice passes away.
Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery is the author of the children's book ''
Anne of Ingleside
''. Toronto's McClelland and Stewart and the Frederick A. Stokes Company released it for the first time in July 1939. (New York). It is also Montgomery's last book to be published. Anne Shirley appears in 10 of these volumes. In terms of publication order, Anne of Ingleside came before Rainbow Valley. The Anne stories are also included in the short story collection of The Blythes Are Quoted, which was written in 1941/42 but wasn't released until 2009. The book's copyright in the US was extended in 1967. Anne travels to Avonlea to see Diana Wright and Anne Cordelia. She returns to the old Morgan house, now named 'Ingleside'. The book spans a period of about six years and includes adventures for each of Anne's five children as well as their aunt Mary Maria Blythe. In many of the stories, the Ingleside children are taken in by children who tell lies to seem more interesting. Gilbert has become distant from Anne, and she fears that he may no longer love her. Shirley, the third son of the Blythes, appears in the book but strangely does not receive a solo "spotlight" story of his own.
