At Agincourt
is one of the most popular historical warfare novel, written by G.A. Henty. He has given a realistic picture of turbulent war time, between France and England during the year 1413-1415. A 16-year old lad Guy Aylmer comes to join Sir Eustace de Villeroy, in feudal castle, Normandle. Soon King ordered to sent Lady Margaret de Villeroy with her children to Paris as hostage, for Sir Eustace's allegiance. Guy Aylmer got the command to protect the Villeroy family. Paris was stormy that time terror and furry was reigning. Soon the city was captured by the 'guild of the butchers' known by their uniforms 'White Hoods of Paris'. They attacked the house where Lady Margaret with her children and Guy Aylmer reside. After a fierce battle white hoods were defeated. Aylmer rescued the family and escaped with them from the France. After that he returned, fought in the battle of Agincourt, peace restored, he earned honour and glory.
Lord Jim
, a book by Joseph Conrad, published in 1900. Jim, a young British sailor, becomes first fellow on the Patna, a ship full of devotees travelling to Mecca for the hazz. When the ship starts speedily taking on water and disaster seems approaching, Jim follows his captain and other crew members in leaving the ship and its passengers. A few days later, they are lifted by a British ship. However, the Patna and its passengers are later also rescued, and the disgraceful actions of the crew are revealed. The other contributors avoid the judicial court of enquiry, leaving Jim to the court alone. He is publicly criticised for this action and the novel follows his later efforts at coming to terms with his past. At trial, Jim meets Marlow and Marlow fixes Jim a position as a post manager at a remote colonial territory known as Patusan. Jim establishes a new identity at Patusan, and soon becomes a leader of great fame. The residents respect him as a spiritual and political force, a kind of father/protector of the people.
George Eliot's novel
Middlemarch
has been graded as one of the most significant novel in the English literature. The novel was published in 1871 and 1872 in eight volumes. The story focused on the inhabitants of the Middlemarch, a fictional town in Midland England. Eliot has covered the important aspects of human life as education, religion, politics, social status of women and marriage. Believing in rationalism Eliot has raised real life issues in the novel. Middlemarch is not meant for entertainment she elaborates the results of taking the wrong decisions. The novel is mainly centred on lives of two characters Dorothea Brooke and Tertius Lydgate. Dorothea is an intelligent, wealthy, young women who married Edward Causa on, an elderly scholar, seeking wisdom and enlightenment herself. In the other hand, young doctor, Tertius Lydgate marries mayor's daughter Rosamond Vincy to get support of his dedicated wife to fulfil his dreams. But both faced cruel reality, their dreams shattered. Dorothea gets rejection from her husband and Lydgate is unhappy to see Rosamond's selfishness and egoism.
This historical novel, "
The Outlaw of Torn
," was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs; he was the creator of Tarzan. This was Edgar's second novel; his first was a science fiction novel named "The Princess of Mars," and he is well known for his third work, "Tarzan of the Apes." The story of this novel is set in the 13th century in England and tells us about the fictitious outlaw Tom. He purportedly harried the nation at the time of a power struggle between King Henry III and Simon de Montfort. Norman, the supposed son of the Frenchman de Vac, the king's ex-fencing master, has a grudge against his former employer and raises the boy to be a simple, brutal human killing machine with a hatred of all things English. This novel has war, historical romance, and revenge, all together with courage and emotions.
The English pursued three expensive wars against the Burmese Empire during the nineteenth century. The costly conflicts ended the existence of about 15,000 English and Indian soldiers. When the last war ended in 1885, Extraordinary England controlled all of northeastern India and Burma. In this book, a young man named Stanley becomes involved in the events surrounding the First Burmese Conflict. Join Stanley as he finds his fortune during a furious time in G. A. Henty's
On the Irrawaddy
: An Account of the Principal Burmese Conflicts. Set in mid-nineteenth-century India and Burma, this book incorporates geological, authentic, and logical references to aid the advanced reader.
The Vicomte de Bragelonne
is the third Dumas novel to include d'Artagnan and his companions, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. The novel is set during the 1660s and worried about the early rule of Louis XIV. The principal half of the original focuses for the most part on Athos and Athos who are dealing with two separate plans. The protagonist of the novel is the musketeers. The book-length finds it much of the time broken into smaller parts. The time frame is set somewhere in the range of 1660 and 1673 against the background of the transformation of Louis XIV from child monarch to Sun King. After 35 years of loyal service, d'Artagnan leaves as lieutenant of the Musketeers. He takes steps to help the exiled Charles II to retake the throne of England. With their help, Charles II is reestablished to the throne, and d'Artagnan is rewarded luxuriously. Part One of the book discusses romantic events at the court of Louis XIV. Raoul de Bragelonne tries to marry his childhood love Louise de La Vallière. Philippe turns out to be terribly desirous of Buckingham and has him banished after their wedding. Aramis learns of a secret prisoner who looks similar to Louis XIV and convinces the Jesuits to name him their new king.
Eldorado
is a continuation book to The Scarlet Pimpernel, first published in 1913. The plot starts in 1794, Sir Percy consents to take Armand St Just, brother of his wife, Marguerite, to France as a part of an arrangement to save the young Dauphin. The plot starts in 1794, Sir Percy consents to take Armand St Only, sibling of his better half, Marguerite, to France as a feature of an arrangement to save the youthful Dauphin. He falls in love with an entertainer named Jeanne L'Ange and fails to remember his promise to his leader. She is captured and Armand fails to trust Sir Percy who has let him know that he will safeguard her and fails to remember his promise to his leader. Sir Percy is caught by Chauvelin and Heron in the cell that was home to Marie Antoinette in her last days. Armand, desperate to share Jeanne's destiny, runs to the entryway of the Temple jail and shouts, "Long Live the King".The Pimpernel has proactively gotten Jeanne's freedom. After 17 days in jail, Percy is certain that the dauphin has been shipped securely into Holland. He then, imagines, by professing to break and admit his whereabouts, to make his departure.
The Star of Gettysburg
is a tale of romance, but also deals with the Civil War. The book opens with "The Guns of Bull Run" and goes to "The Guns of Shiloh". From "The Scouts of Stonewall," and "The Sword of Antietam" to the current volume, the story is about the young Southern hero, Harry Kenton, and his friends. The book is a historic fiction but Altsheler tried to keep it real. There are parts of the battle that get overlooked and you don't know the generals' objectives. But Altsheler brings out the human side and showed friendship with enemies too. The Civil War fought between United States of America and the Confederate States of America. Battle of Gettysburg is one of the best books by Altsheler and is popular among young and adult readers. It is the story of one of the biggest battle that took place in the Western Hemisphere. It is a culturally important book and shows the face of the civil war.
The fourth novel in the venerable adventure series,
The Elusive Pimpernel
by Baroness Orczy, was first released in 1908.French Agent Chauvelin visits England in 1793 as an authorized agent of the French government. His true objective is to deceive Sir Percy Blakeney into going back to France so that he can be apprehended and executed there. At a gala on Richmond Green, a young French actress named Désirée Candielle helps devise the plot.To raise money for the underprivileged in Paris, Désirée is operating a tent with a mock guillotine. Marguerite Blakeney walks into her stall and is immediately moved by the young girl's tragic tale. Then, in front of the Prince of Wales, she extends an invitation for her to perform at her Richmond home. Sir Percy insists that they both visit him at his house as scheduled.Sir Percy Blakeney's Scarlet Pimpernel is set up by Désirée Candielle as part of a plot to get rid of him by his arch-rival Chauvelin. Marguerite is arrested for attempting to enter France on a false passport, and the citizens of Boulogne are threatened with death if she escapes. But as always Percy is more than a match for his nemesis and proves his mettle in every battle.
