Die jeweiligen Umweltleistungen der Unternehmen unterscheiden sich grundlegend und sind oftmals sogar entscheidend für deren wirtschaftlichen Erfolg. Allgemein wird in einer Volkswirtschaft stets eine gesellschaftliche Wohlstandsvermehrung angestrebt, was zwangsweise mit dem wirtschaftlichen Wachstum gleichgestellt wird. Der Begriff Wachstum wird konventionell mit einer materiellen, quantitativen Zunahme einer Größe verbunden und lässt sich auf diese Weise nur noch schwer mit einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung vereinbaren, da die natürliche Umwelt in ihren Ressourcen endlich begrenzt ist. Nachhaltigkeitsmaßnahmen sollten in erster Linie das jeweilige Unternehmen langfristig auf den Markt ausrichten und die Weichen für ein komplikationsloses Weiterbestehen im Hintergrund der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung stellen. Jedoch bereiten solche Investitionen zugleich hohe Kosten und es lassen sich verschiedene Motive für Umweltleistungen in den Unternehmen identifizieren. Allgemein wird zwischen heteronomen und autonomen Beweggründen unterschieden. Letzteres beschreibt hierbei die freiwillige, vorbeugende Entschärfung von Konflikten und wird beispielsweise oft aus Liebe zur Natur oder mit dem Wunsch, die Artenvielfalt und die Schönheit der Natur für die nachfolgenden Generationen zu gewährleisten, betrieben. Da dieses Motiv allerdings sehr kostspielig und auch nur in geringem Maße die kurzfristige Wettbewerbsfähigkeit eines Unternehmens fördert, sind überwiegend heteronome Motive Gründe für die Durchsetzung von Nachhaltigkeitsmaßnahmen. Diese werden wiederum auf Markt, gesellschaftliche Gruppen und Staat aufgespalten.
