L'opposition de l'Orient et de l'Occident, ramenée à ses termes les plus simples, est au fond identique à celle que l'on se plaît souvent à établir entre la contemplation et l'action. Nous nous sommes déjà expliqué là-dessus en maintes occasions, et nous avons examiné les différents points de vue où l'on peut se placer pour envisager les rapports de ces deux termes: sont-ce vraiment là deux contraires, ou ne seraient-ce pas plutôt deux complémentaires, ou bien encore n'y aurait-il pas, en réalité, entre l'un et l'autre une relation, non de coordination, mais de subordination ? Nous ne ferons donc ici que résumer très rapidement ces considérations, indispensables à qui veut comprendre l'esprit de l'Orient en général et celui de l'Inde en particulier.

Le point de vue qui consiste à opposer purement et simplement l'une à l'autre la contemplation et l'action est le plus extérieur et le plus superficiel de tous. L'opposition existe bien dans les apparences, mais elle ne peut être absolument irréductible; d'ailleurs, on pourrait en dire autant pour tous les contraires, qui cessent d'être tels dès qu'on s'élève au-dessus d'un certain niveau, celui où leur opposition a toute sa réalité. Qui dit opposition ou contraste dit, par là même, désharmonie ou déséquilibre, c'est-à-dire quelque chose qui ne peut exister que sous un point de vue particulier et limité; dans l'ensemble des choses, l'équilibre est fait de la somme de tous les déséquilibres, et tous les désordres partiels concourent bon gré mal gré à l'ordre total.

En considérant la contemplation et l'action comme complémentaires, on se place à un point de vue déjà plus profond et plus vrai que le précédent, parce que l'opposition s'y trouve conciliée et résolue, ses deux termes s'équilibrant en quelque sorte l'un par l'autre. Il s'agirait alors de deux éléments également nécessaires qui se complètent et s'appuient mutuellement, et qui constituent la double activité, intérieure et extérieure, d'un seul et même être, que ce soit chaque homme pris en particulier ou l'humanité envisagée collectivement. Cette conception est assurément plus harmonieuse et plus satisfaisante que la première; cependant, si l'on s'y tenait exclusivement, on serait tenté, en vertu de la corrélation ainsi établie, de placer sur le même plan la contemplation et l'action, de sorte qu'il n'y aurait qu'à s'efforcer de tenir autant que possible la balance égale entre elles, sans jamais poser la question d'une supériorité quelconque de l'une par rapport à l'autre. Or, en fait, cette question s'est toujours posée, et, en ce qui concerne l'antithèse de l'Orient et de l'Occident, nous pouvons dire qu'elle consiste précisément en ce que l'Orient maintient la supériorité de la contemplation, tandis que l'Occident, et spécialement l'Occident moderne, affirme au contraire la supériorité de l'action sur la contemplation.
