Dans Galates, Paul défend l'Évangile contre les intrus judéo-chrétiens de Galatie qui prétendaient que les Galates devaient d'abord devenir juifs pour devenir chrétiens. Paul, à son tour, répond en défendant la justification par la foi et la vie dans l'Esprit, prouvant que Dieu accepte les païens sur la base de la foi dans le Messie. La lettre est divisée en trois parties: 1) Paul défend son apostolat (Gal 1-2); 2) Paul défend la doctrine de la justification par la foi (Gal 3-4); 3) exhortations pratiques (Gal 5-6)[1] La lettre aux Galates est différente des autres lettres écrites par l'apôtre Paul. Il n'a pas été écrit à une personne spécifique, ni à une église spécifique, mais à un groupe d'églises, "les églises de Galatie".Ce livre (Lettre) comporte six chapitres et fait partie du Nouveau Testament. Il a été écrit par l'apôtre Paul vers 48-57 après J.-C., selon l'endroit exact où le livre a été envoyé et selon qu'il s'agissait du premier ou du deuxième voyage de Paul dans la province romaine de Galatie, une région qui fait aujourd'hui partie de la Turquie.Paul soutient que les chrétiens, tant juifs que païens, jouissent d'un salut complet en Christ. Ils sont justifiés (3, 6-9), adoptés (4, 4-7), renouvelés (4, 6; 6, 15) et rendus héritiers de Dieu selon la promesse de l'alliance faite à Abraham (3, 15-18). Ainsi, la foi en Christ au Calvaire nous libère à jamais de la nécessité de chercher le salut par les oeuvres de la loi. Cette poursuite est de toute façon impossible, puisque la loi ne sauve pas, et n'était pas destinée à le faire (3,19-24). Par conséquent, les croyants ne doivent pas revenir au principe de l'observation de la loi comme base du salut, sinon ils retournent à l'esclavage (5,1) en se privant de la grâce du Christ (5,2-4). Au contraire, ils doivent s'accrocher à la liberté que le Christ leur a donnée, et servir Dieu et leur prochain dans la puissance de l'Esprit, comme des hommes libres (5,13-18), en accomplissant avec joie la volonté de leur Sauveur (6,2).Le discours de Paul démontre que toutes les versions légalistes de l'évangile sont des corruptions de celui-ci, et que la jouissance de la liberté chrétienne dépend du fait de voir que le salut est par la grâce seule, par Jésus-Christ seul, reçu par la foi seule.
