Wie Wichtig die Kunde der geographifchen Eigennamen bei Fragen der alten Völkergefchichte ift und wie fie gehandhabt werden kann, hat Wilhelm von Humboldt in feiner "prüfung der Unterfuchungen über die Urbewohner Hifpaniens vermittelft der Vaskifchen Sprache gezeigt: welche er auf grofse Sammlungen celtifche1 und vaskifcher, fo wie anderer Ortsna men in einem langen Striche des füdlicberen Europa's géftutzt hat. Der Eigenname hat eine merkwürdige Starrheit und Dauer. Der Ortsname noch mehr als der Perfonenname. Denn der Menfch wechlelt und verfchwindet; er leidet von dem Einfluffe der Gegenwart. Aber es bleibt die fefte Erde und die Ã?rtlichkeit; fie trägt die wandelnden Gefchlechter und Völker, ein ftummer Zeuge der Weltgefchicke. Augenblicklich, fo wie er gegeben, ringt fich der Eigenname von der Sprache los. Er ift nicht mehr die Sache. Ein Gefetz fchon, eine innere Stimme gebietet uns, bei dem Eigennamen nicht an die Sache zu denken, von der er entnommen; es verfteht fich von felbft, dafs man bei dem Namen nicht mehr der Sache, des appellativen Sinnes, gedenke: es zu thun, erfcheint.üngefchickt, kindifch und lächerlich. Ich brauche nicht allein an die häfslichen und unglucklichen Namen zu erin nern. Was die, Abficht und der innere Drang der Natürlichkeit, die mit der Wiederholung und Gewohnheit lich einftell'ende Bewufstlofigkeit nicht thun; wirkt die alles Bewufstfeyn auslöfchende Zeit: fie, die dem Menfchen fogar entreifst, was er fo gern feftgehalten hätte! Die grofsen Umwälzungen der Weltgefchichte kommen hinzu, welcheganze Epochen vor den Augen der Nachwelt zerftoren, und die Auslegung eines todten, überlieferten Stoffes unfern fchwachen..kräften und unfrem befangenen Sinne überlaffen. So ftarke Schläge-find nicht nothwendig, um der Sprache den Namen zu ent fremden. Eben weil er als eine todte und ftarre Form behandelt, und aus dem Sprachbewufstfeyn, aus der Erinnerung des geiftigen Inhalts gerückt wird, entfernt. Er fich unter den Händen des Volks von der Sprache; fchon manchmahl in einigen Jahrhunderten wird er unkennbar. Wahrend die ganze geiftige Welt der Sprache in ihrer äufseren Form und ihrem inneren Gehalte in einem immerwährenden, ftufenweifen Wandel fich befindet; Laute fort fchreitend wechfeln, abfalleh und zuw;achfen; in der Abwechslung der Dia leete der ganze allgemeine Wortbau, wie ein buntes Farbenfpiel, in neue Geftaltungen eintritt: bleibt die Welt der Eigennamen, von diefen Verän derungen kaum berührt, zurück; wirdaber wieder, un ungleichen Maafse.
