Synopsis du livre:
Quatre messieurs britanniques, qui vivent installés en Inde, sont forcés d'être amis par les circonstances, Hummil est ingénieur; Lowndes est un fonctionnaire; Motram, arpenteur, et Spurstow, médecin. Le quatuor a l'habitude de se retrouver chez Hummil tous les dimanches pour jouer aux cartes. Les quatre ont très peu en commun, mais ils sont nécessaires pour maintenir leur statut face à la population indigène. Un dimanche après le dîner, Motram et Lowndes rentrent chez eux, tandis que Hummil et Spurstow passent la nuit. Hummil subit une attaque de nature inconnue et est soigné par le docteur Spurstow. Le lendemain matin, le médecin s'en va, s'étant assuré que son ami s'est rétabli. Fidèle à la citation hebdomadaire, Motram, Lowndes et Spurstow arrivent chez Hummil et découvrent des nouvelles totalement inattendues concernant Hummil, l'hôte; un événement qui bouleverse ses trois amis car il a tous les signes d'être mêlé au mystère le plus inexplicable...
Biographie:
Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) était un écrivain et poète britannique, auteur de grandes histoires, de contes pour enfants, de romans et de poésie, tels que The Jungle The Book (The Book of the Virgin Lands, 1894), le roman d'espionnage Kim (1901), le court histoire "L'homme qui voulait être roi" ("L'homme qui pourrait être roi", 1888), dont beaucoup ont été emmenés au cinéma.
Il a rejeté plusieurs prix à l'époque, mais en 1907, il a accepté et a reçu le prix Nobel de littérature, ce qui fait de lui le premier écrivain britannique à recevoir ce prix, et le plus jeune lauréat du prix Nobel de littérature à ce jour.
