Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Die Rechnungslegung und Unternehmenspublizität hat in den letzten Jahren vielerorts eine rasante Entwicklung erfahren. Aus der Erkenntnis, dass sich die finanziellen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse der Unternehmen schneller und häufiger ändern als zuvor, wurde Mitte der sechziger Jahre im europäischen Raum der Ruf nach einer unterjährigen Publizitätspflicht für börsennotierte Unternehmen laut. Dem anlagesuchenden Publikum sollten zur rationalen Fundierung der Anlageentscheidung neben der jährlichen Rechnungslegung unterjährig zeitnahe und aussagekräftige Informationen über die Unternehmensentwicklung zur Verfügung gestellt werden. An eine gesetzliche Publizitätspflicht von Zwischenberichten wurde seinerzeit jedoch noch nicht gedacht. Erst Ende der achtziger Jahre, zu einem Zeitpunkt, zu dem in den USA für unterjährige Berichte schon seit langem Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) existierten, wurden in Österreich börsennotierte Unternehmen zur Herausgabe von Zwischenberichten verpflichtet. Auf europäischer Ebene war dies bereits 1982 mit der EG-Zwischen- oder Halbjahresberichtsrichtlinie umgesetzt worden. Die im österreichischen Börsegesetz gesetzlich geregelte Zwischenberichterstattung stellt seither eine Erweiterung des Publizitätssystems börsennotierter Unternehmen dar. Heutzutage rückt die unterjährige Berichterstattung angesichts der steigenden Anforderungen internationaler Kapitalmärkte an die unter-nehmerische Publizität immer mehr in das Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit.5 Im Zuge der mit dem Wachstum der Kapitalmärkte einhergehenden geforderten Internationalisierung und Harmonisierung der Rechnungslegungssysteme haben auch die International Accounting Standards (IAS) deutlich an Gewicht hinzugewonnen. Dass das für die Festlegung der IAS zuständige International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) für die Zwischenberichterstattung einen eigenen Standard vorsieht, bestätigt seinerseits die große Relevanz der unterjährigen
