Josef von Sylt, der Sohn des Leitenden Chefarztes des ZML, Generalleutnants Werner Sylt, der aus klassenkämpferischen Gründen das "von" penetrant unterschlug wird vom Vater an die Humboldt-Universität zum medizinischem Studium befohlen. Nach dem Studium und einem Zusatzstudium an der Lomonossow-Universität in Moskau soll er seinen Vater als Chef des Zentralen Militärlazarett in Bad Saarow beerben. Josef, der seinen Vornamen von Stalin geerbt hat, hat eine DDR-typische Entwicklung: Sein Vater war als Militärarzt der Deutschen Wehrmacht 1943 in sowjetische Kriegsgefangenschaft geraten. Aus dieser war er 1949 als glühender Kommunist zurück gekehrt und im Auftrage der neuen DDR-Regierung mit dem Wiederaufbau der Charité beauftragt worden. Dort lernte er die Krankenschwester, die bürgerliche Anna Weimar kennen, die er 1950 heiratete. 1951 wurde Josef und 1953 seine Schwester Olga geboren. 1954 ging der Vater im Auftrage der Partei als einer der leitenden Ärzte an das neu gegründete Zentralkrankenhaus der Kasernierten Volkspolizei. Noch vor der Einschulung des Sohnes 1957 wurde Oberstleutnant Werner Sylt stellvertretender Chefarztes und 1959 deren Chefarzt im Rang eines Generals.1957 wurde Josef Jungpionier und 1961 Thälmannpionier. 1967 auf der erweiterten Oberschule trat er der FDJ bei und mit dem Abitur, auf Druck seines Vaters, 1969 der SED.Josef durchschaut schon früh die Machtverhältnisse in der DDR. Von seiner bürgerlichen Mutter hat er die Skepsis und Neugierde, von seinem Vater den Tatendrang und Wagemut geerbt.Als er 1969 an der Humboldt-Universität das Studium aufnimmt, steht sein Weg für ihn bereits fest: Er will weder Mediziner werden noch für die NVA dienen, er will in den Westen und dort Rockmusiker werden.Während eines Besuchs der Staatsbibliothek lernt er den Tiefbauarbeiter Günther Marx kennen, der sich, nach eigenen Angaben, auf ein Studium der Architektur vorbereitet aber nicht studieren darf, da er aus der falschen Schicht stammen soll. Marx ist jedoch Mitarbeiter der HA XX, der den Auftrag hat, die studierenden Kinder von DDR-Funktionären zu überwachen und vor dem Klassenfeind zu schützen. Marx gibt vor, auch die westliche Rockmusik zu lieben. Josef hilft Marx aus freien Stücken bei der Auswertung der Berliner Infrastruktur der 30er Jahre, der echtes berufliches Interesse daran findet. Er übernimmt die Recherchen über die technische Struktur der Deutschen Reichspost. Aus den technischen Unterlagen durchforstet er die Bebauung um die Gleimstraße, in der er wohnt und er macht eine überraschende Entdeckung. An seinem Wohnhaus vorbei, zwei Meter unter der Straße führt ein Schacht der Post durch den Gleimtunnel in den Wedding. Dieser wurde seit 1945 nur noch eingeschränkt genutzt und mit dem Bau der Berliner Mauer 1961 still gelegt - aber der Schacht besteht noch und er führt in den Westen, in die Freiheit.
