Diese Gedanken hat der Protagonist des behandelten Romans "Im Westen nichts Neues", als er im Lazarett liegt und über den Krieg nachdenkt. Doch Krieg, was ist das? Mit seinem Kriegsroman "Im Westen nichts Neues" hat Erich Maria Remarque ein Buch geschaffen, dass die Frage, was Krieg ist auf eine ehrliche und unerschrockene Weise beantwortet. Er stellt den Krieg als das dar, was er tatsächlich ist: etwas grausames, schreckliches und sinnloses. Kurz gesagt: etwas negatives. Jedoch zeigt er nicht nur eine negative Seite des Krieges auf, sondern auch eine positive. Für jeden Leser führt die Darstellungsweise des Krieges mit einer positiven und einer negativen Seite dazu, sich zu fragen wie das sein kann, denn der Krieg kann nicht gleichzeitig gut und schlecht sein. Genau um diesen scheinbaren Widerspruch, den Remarque hier aufmacht, soll es in der vorliegenden Arbeit gehen. Es soll herausgefunden werden, ob es sich tatsächlich um einen Widerspruch handelt oder ob die beiden Darstellungsweisen möglicherweise in einem inneren Zusammenhang stehen. Um sich der Antwort auf diese Frage zu nähern, werden zuallererst die beiden Seiten des Krieges, die Remarque darstellt, aufgezeigt. Dazu werden für jede Seite zwei Aspekte, die der Darstellung dieser jeweiligen Seite des Krieges dienen, herausgegriffen und ausgeführt. Die beiden Aspekte für die negative Seite des Krieges werden der des Leides und des Todes sowie der der zerstörten und betrogenen Jugend sein.
