Beobachtungen zeigen, daß die Winde der Hochatmosphäre sehr wesentliche Gezeitenanteile enthalten. In der E -Schicht der Ionosphäre liegen die Geschwindigkeitsamplituden der Gezeitenwinde in der Größen- ordnung 50 bis 100 m sec -1 . Die Frage nach den Ursachen dieser Windsysteme, insbesondere die Frage der Lokalisierung der Anregung, war bislang offen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird davon ausgegangen, daß die Gezeitenbewegungen in der hohen Atmosphäre durch direkte thermische Anregung entstehen. Die theoretische Behandlung erfolgt in der linearen hydromechanischen Näherung, wie sie in der klas- sischen Gezeitentheorie üblich ist. Als zusätzliche Effekte, die ein unbegrenztes Anwachsen der Amplitu- den mit der Höhe verhindern, werden Wärmeleitung und Viskosität berücksichtigt, die in der Ionosphäre zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnen. Zur Vereinfachung des Modells wird angenommen, daß die Atmosphäre im Grundzustand isotherm ist und als ein ideales Gas mit konstantem mittlerem Molekulargewicht behandelt werden kann. Dennoch kann das entsprechende System partieller Differentialgleichungen auf einfache Weise weder entkoppelt noch se- pariert werden. Zwar existiert eine Integraltransformation, mit der eine Entkopplung gelingt, doch sind letztlich die gefundenen Lösungsreihen wegen der schlechten Konvergenz in der Praxis nicht zu verwen- den. Als Ausgangspunkt der numerischen Rechnungen dient daher ein Störungs ansatz nach dem Coriolispa- rameter, was sich als nützlich erweist, weil in der E-Schicht die Coriolisterme in den Bewegungsglei- chungen höchstens von gleicher Größenordnung wie die Reibungsterme sind. Die Konvergenz des Verfah- rens verbessert sich mit wachsender Höhe.
