Jahrhundert, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das Gros der jüngeren Forschung begreift Brockes' Lyrik traditionell immer noch hauptsächlich in dem Versuch der Verschränkung von Gott und Natur, christlicher Gotteserkenntnis und wissenschaftlicher Beobachtung der Natur. In den meisten Untersuchungen kommt deshalb der physikotheologischen Ausrichtung seines Werks große Bedeutung zu. Die Idee der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, einmal nicht die Betrachtung der Lyrik des Dichters zu ihrem Ausgang zu wählen. Es soll sich ihr vielmehr über das Verständnis eines Primärtexts genähert werden, den Brockes als Mitherausgeber der frühaufklärerischen Hamburger Moralischen Wochenzeitschrift "Der Patriot" als deren 85. Artikel am 16. August 1725, im zweiten Jahr ihres insgesamt dreijährigen Erscheinens, publizierte. Diese Arbeit wird beweisen, dass das im besagten Artikel diskutierte Konzept des Vergnügens die lyrische Suche der Dichtung Brockes' nach der Entsprechung zwischen einer natürlichen, göttlichen und weltlichen Ordnung reflektiert. Sie offenbart unter ihrem zweiten Gliederungspunkt, inwiefern diese Suche in Form der Vergnügung zeitgleich als ein Ausdruck weltlicher Tugendhaftigkeit und Weg zu "ewiger Glückseligkeit" zu betrachten ist. Im folgenden Schritt ist unter dem dritten Punkt und unter Berücksichtigung der Arbeit von Wolfram Mauser zu belegen, wie sich aus dem Konzept des Vergnügens eine eigenständige Existenzberechtigung des Bürgertums formuliert. Diese, so wird gezeigt, folgt der Gotteserkenntnis, ohne dabei mit der Progressivität der sozialhistorischen Verhältnisse im bürgerlich prosperierenden Hamburg des angehenden 18.
