Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Die Volksrepublik China (VR China) gilt als einer der wichtigsten Zukunftsmärkte weltweit. Seit der Öffnung im Jahre 1978 wächst die Wirtschaft in einem enormen Tempo, mit konstanten Wachstumsraten zwischen 7% und 9,5%. Mit Einführung der „sozialistischen Marktwirtschaft" hat sich viel verändert im Reich der Mitte. Mittlerweile ist die VR China der Welthandelsorganisation (WTO) beigetreten und öffnet sich im Zuge dessen weiter dem Ausland. Dies bietet große Möglichkeiten für ausländische Unternehmen. Neben dem stetigen Anstieg des Bruttoinlandprodukts (BIP), lassen auch das weltweit größte Absatzpotential mit 1,3 Mrd. Menschen und die günstigen Produktionsmöglichkeiten die Herzen der westlichen Manager höher schlagen. Bei vielen Unternehmen besteht „eine gewisse Chinabesoffenheit", so wie es der frühere Wirtschaftsminister Otto Graf Lambsdorff ausgedrückt hat. Den wirtschaftlichen Chancen stehen allerdings auch Hemmnisse gegenüber, da bedacht werden muss, dass China vor 1978 ein System der Planwirtschaft hatte und immer noch planwirtschaftliche Elemente in der Wirtschaft verankert sind. So greift die chinesische Regierung mit radikalen Maßnahmen in die Wirtschaft ein (z.B. Verbot der Kreditvergabe an bestimmte Branchen), um die drohende wirtschaftliche Überhitzung abzukühlen. Eines der größten Probleme ist aber nach wie vor die Durchsetzung von Rechtsansprüchen, trotz der gesetzlichen Verbesserungen im Zuge des WTO-Beitritts im Jahre 2001. Hinzu kommt, dass die Konkurrenz in nahezu allen Bereichen der Wirtschaft stark zunimmt. Weitere Problemfelder können die ausgeprägte Produktpiraterie sein, sowie die Unterschiede in Sprache und Kultur, die sich bspw. in den unterschiedlichen Verhandlungsgepflogenheiten äußern. Diese kurzen Ausführungen lassen die möglichen Gefahren eines China-Engagements erahnen.
