Verstehen die einen unter Lernen die Funktionsweise des Gehirns oder dessen Speicherkapazität, so andere die Bewältigung von Problemsituationen, wieder andere das Erlangen neuen Wissens oder gar Verhaltens- und Einstellungsänderungen. Lebenslanges Lernen, soziales Lernen, interkulturelles Lernen oder Lernen in der Gruppe, intentionales, implizites oder inzidentelles Lernen, Lernen im formellen oder nonformellen Rahmen, selbstorganisiertes und selbstgesteuertes Lernen: Dies alles sind Begriffe, denen man in diesem Zusammenhang nur allzu häufig begegnet. Der Unterscheidungsgrad von Lernformen und die dazugehörigen Lerntypen und -klassen erweitern dieses Spektrum schier unbegrenzt. Um den sehr komplexen Prozess des Lernens ausreichend beschreiben und erklären zu können, ist es erforderlich, interdisziplinäre Theorieansätze miteinander in Bezug zu setzen. Ob es neurophysiologische Lernmechanismen sind oder die biologische Ausstattung unseres zentralen Nervensystems dafür verantwortlich ist, dass es dem Menschen durch seine Evolution hinweg möglich war, sich in der Entwicklung des Lernens anzupassen und mit zu entwickeln wäre nur eine Frage nach der Lernfähigkeit der Menschen. Obwohl der Einfluss des kalendarischen Alters der Menschen auf deren Lernfähigkeit inzwischen etwas relativiert wurde, sich unter anderem darin die These eines lebenslangen Lernens begründet, ist unstreitig, dass Menschen in unterschiedlichem Alter auch unterschiedlich lernen, was eine Differenzierung der Lernmethoden für Kinder, Jugendliche, Erwachsene und Ältere erfordert.
