Unter Ciceros Korrespondea begegnet uns auch C. Matius, der treue Freund Casars. Es ist freilich nicht viel, was uns von dem brieflichen Verkehr dieser M�nner erhalten ist. Aus dem Jahre 49 liegen ein paar in Eile hingeworfene Zeilen vor, mit denen Matius in seinem und des Trebatius Namen Cicero eine wichtige C�sar betreffende Mitteilung zugeben liefs. Etwa ein halbes Jahr nach Casars Ermordung veranlafste eine pers�nliche Beschwerde des Metius, deren �berbringer Trebatius war, ein l�ngeres Rechtfertigungsschreiben Ciceros, auf welches Metius dann ausf�hrlich anwortete; beide Briefe sind noch vorhanden. Das ist alles. Aber es gen�gt in Verbindung mit einigen Briefstellen, wo Cicero des Metius Erw�hnung thut, uns uber das Verh�ltnis der beiden Ma nner zu einander aufzuklaren, und reicht vollkommen aus, uns einen herzerquickenden Einblick in das edle Gamut des Metius zu verschaffen. Das einm�tige Urteil der Nachwelt �ber den selbstlosen Anh�nger des allm �chtigen Diktators grundet sich im wesent lichen auf die beiden Briefe, die Ende August 44 gewechselt wurden. In der That ist die goldene Gesinnung, die aus des Matius Erwiderung spricht, �ber alles Lob erheben, und der Eindruck, den wir von dem Wesen 'des Mannes aus seinen eigenen Bekenntnissen sowohl wie aus den Mitteilungen Ciceros �ber ihn gewinnen, ist von der wohlthuendsten Art; wir f�hlen uns unwiderstehlich zu ihm hingezogen, und seine Trauer um den so treulos wie planlos hinge mordeten Freund l�fst uns selbst dessen Wert lebhafter empfinden. Neben ihm erscheint Cicero in einem weniger g�nstigen Lichte, und es liegt nicht blofs an der f�r Cicero unvorteilhaften Situation, dafs sein Brief den Vergleich mit des Matius Antwort nicht aush�lt: man f�hlt, dafs als Mensch und Charakter der Verfasser der Antwort sich �ber den Schreiber des Briefes erhebt. Dennoch bin ich der Ansicht, dafs Cicero in seinem Verh�ltnis zu Matius mehrfach ungerecht beurteilt werden ist, und dafs er die scharfe Mifsbilligung nicht verdient, die ihm der neueste Erkl�rer der beiden Briefe zu teil werden l�fst, glaube ich beweisen zu k�nnen. Hier sollen die Beziehungen der beiden Manner, soweit sie sich an der Hand der Ciceronischen Korrespondenz verfolgen lassen, dargelegt werden; ich hoffe dadurch zu einer gerechteren W�rdigung Ciceros einen Beitrag zu liefern und m�chte die Gelegenheit auch benutzen, um einige mehr neben s�chliche Punkte, �ber die meines Erachtens irrige Ansichten verbreitet sind, klarzustellen.
