Jahrhunderts das dortige Verhältnis zwischen Religion und Staat. Ihren besonderen Ausdruck findet dieses Verhältnis in der Zivilreligion. Sie und ihren Einfluß auf die Reden von Präsident George W. Bush bilden das Thema dieser Arbeit. Das erste Kapitel gewährt einen Überblick über die Faktoren, die zur Entstehung der Zivilreligion beigetragen haben. Viele ihrer Symbole haben sich noch aus der Zeit der ersten Siedler gehalten. Zur Sprache kommen die ersten Siedler, die religiöse Einstellung der Puritaner und der Gründerväter der Vereinigten Staaten. Im zweiten Kapitel wird die Theorie der Zivilreligion untersucht. Den Beginn bildet Robert Bellah, der mit seinem Artikel Civil Religion in Amerika im Jahre 1967 eine regelrechte Debatte über die religiösen und gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse in den USA einleitete. Sein Beitrag fand zahlreiche Befürworter und Kritiker. Einige von ihnen werden exemplarisch behandelt. Den Abschluß des zweiten Kapitels bildet ein Blick auf Bellahs eigene Weiterentwicklung.
