Irreversibel sind mit moderner Zivilisationsdynamik zugleich Sakularisierungsprozesse verbunden - unaufhaltsam sogar in den Konflikten zwischen Emanzipation und fundamentalistischer Reaktion in islamisch gepragten Landern und residual auch noch in der christlichen Welt. Erganzend finden sich acht Kapitel zur Philosophie bedeutender Modernisierungstheoretiker von Georg Simmel bis zu Helmuth Plessner. About the Author: Prof. Dr. phil. Dr. theol. h. c. Hermann Lubbe, am 31.12.1926 in Aurich/Ostfriesland geboren, lehrte von 1971-1991 als Professor fur Philosophie und Politische Theorie an der Universitat Zurich. Von 1966 bis 1970 war er Staatssekretar in Nordthein-Westfalen, zunachst im Kultusministerium, dann beim Ministerprasidenten; von 1975-1978 prasidierte er die Allgemeine Gesellschaft fur Philosophie Deutschland. Sein umfangreiches Werk ist vielfach ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Ernst-Robert-Curtius-Preis fur Essayistik (1990), dem Friedenspreis der Max Schmidheiny-Stiftung der Universitat St. Gallen (1993), dem Preis der Hanns Martin Schleyer-Stiftung (1995) und dem Alfred Krupp-Wissenschaftspreis (2004).
