About the Book

Zero To Hero: The Art of Action on Film

This book explains the theories and techniques of the two major types of action performances used for film. The flow and intricacy of the Hong Kong Style Action and the intensity and violence of the Hollywood Style Action. Zero to Hero covers all the necessary basics for the different types of action genres - Hero, revenge, training, chases and fight scenes.

"Being a great fighter in real life, does not necessarily mean you will be a great fighter for film!" - Tazito Garcia

Action films are a film genre known to have action sequences, such as hand-to-hand combat, car chases, high octane explosions, and a variety of stunts.

In the west, adventure, cowboy and war films popularized many iconic characters such as, Dirty Harry, James Bond and Indiana Jones. However, the action film genre did not become dominant until the mid 1980s and 1990s, by actors such as Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator), Bruce Willis (Die Hard) and Sylvester Stallone (Rocky).
In the East, films has undergone multiple revolutions of action films. From high flying, sword wielding kung fu masters to Bruce Lee, John Woo and Jackie Chan. With budgets that are a fraction of the cost by Hollywood standards, Hong Kong films have produced some of the most exciting and innovative action sequences for film.

"The best thing about action is seeing the physical exchange between the characters the dialogue often builds up to. Action is the art of physical dialogue to highlight the characters traits and embellish the story. Action is often relatable and exciting to the audience. It's also a great way to push yourself physically when you're the one performing it." - Tazito Garcia
