Dezember 1915 ruft General Yuan Shikai das chinesische Kaiserreich, nachdem er es zuvor selbst gestürzt hat, erneut aus und ernennt sich selbst zum Kaiser. Dieses kurze Zwischenspiel - es überdauerte immerhin nur 83 Tage - wird in der modernen Geschichtsschreibung allgemein meist nur als letztes Aufbäumen des alten Feudalsystems beschrieben. Mit der erfolgten Xinhai-Revolution, eingeleitet durch den Aufstand in Wuchang, habe sich die Stimme des Volkes erhoben. Der Restaurationsversuch sei somit ein aus Egoismus und Größenwahn getriebenes Unterfangen, das schon vor seinem Beginn zum Scheitern verurteilt war. Kann man nun aber den Verlauf der chinesischen Geschichte und die revolutionären Ereignisse 1911 so einfach als proletarische Revolution deuten? Dieser Aufstand lässt sich sicher nicht mit einer bürgerlichen Revolution, wie der Französischen Revolution vergleichen. Im China das beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts war die Macht bei weitem nicht unter den Reihen des Proletariats auszumachen, sondern vielmehr unter denen die Geld und genügend Waffen zur Verfügung hatten. Die Protestaktionen in Wuchang entstammten der Feder Sun Yatsens, einem Berufsrevolutionär aus Guangdong, der sich seit der vernichtenden Niederlage Chinas im Sino-Japanischen Krieg 1895 für eine Auflösung des monarchischen Systems und die Gründung einer chinesischen Republik einsetzte. Sie war aber sicherlich nur ein Katalysator des unvermeidbaren Zerfalls, der die Qing-Regierung unlängst heimsuchte und sie nun wie "ein Kartenhaus" zusammenfallen ließ. Dass diese Aktionen aber den Willen des ganzen Volkes nach Reform und Republik wiederspiegeln, möchte ich bezweifeln.
