Erstmalig in deutscher Sprache: Das komplette historische Poem aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Yuan Phai, die Niederlage Lan Na Tais, ist eine der fruhesten siamesischen literarischen Kompositionen und weist neben den Elementen aus Prosa und Poesie auch sakrale Inhalte sowie historische Fragmente auf. Verfasst wurde es in 1.200 Zeilen in einem Metrum, welches in Thailand als Elephanten-Fuß Khlong bekannt ist. Das Poem singt das Hohelied auf Konig Borommatrailokanat von Ayutthaya, dessen Regnum vom historiographischen Mainstream auf 1448-1488 datiert wird. Den dramaturgischen Hohepunkt des Oeuvres bildet eine Schlacht in den Jahren 1474/75, vermutlich um Chiang Chun, dem antiken Vorlaufer von Sri Satchanalai. Unstrittig zahlt das Yuan Phai Khlong Dan zum Genre der literarischen Lobreden auf einen Herrscher und ist damit Bestandteil einer wichtigen Gattung der klassischen thailandischen Literatur. Das Poem ist aber auch ein militarisches Epos, welches die Geschichte einer Schlacht erzahlt. Und erstaunlicherweise ist fur die folgenden 300 Jahre kein weiteres Oeuvre dieses Genres bekannt. Weshalb entstand also dieses einzigartige Werk just zu diesem Zeitpunkt und welche Botschaft sollte es senden? Die Vermutung drangt sich auf, dass die Grunde verschiedener Natur waren. Unstrittig diente es dem Konig und seiner Entourage zur Selbstbestatigung und Erbauung bei den Festen am Hof. Es war aber auch sicherlich ein klares Signal nach innen, die absolutistische Stellung der herrschenden Dynastie im Allgemeinen und die Konig Borommatrailokanats im Besonderen nicht in Frage zu stellen. Insbesondere die administrativen und politischen Veranderungen im Rahmen der Reorganisation des Reiches durfte zu Unruhen bei Teilen des Adels gefuhrt haben. Auch außenpolitisch war das Poem als beredtes Zeugnis fur die militarische Macht Ayutthayas und seines Konigs dienlich. Und, last but not least, der Nachwelt von seinem personlichen Ruhm zu kunden und damit in die Annalen der Geschichte als großer und tugendhafter Herrscher einzugehen, lag und liegt wohl in der DNA aller Herrschenden. Insofern hat das Yuan Phai Khlong Dan eine weitaus großere Bedeutung als das zu sein, was es ohne Zweifel auch ist: ein herausragendes literarisches Werk in der Tradition der Troubadourdichtung.
