About the Book

Getting fat used to be a problem of middle age or wealth but in the past twenty years it has become a problem of teenagers, children and even babies. This book tells you why this happens, how different diets work, why they eventually fail and how to keep them working. It shows how apparently opposite diets work through the body's natural weight control mechanism and helps you select the right diet for you. Less Anyone can develop a diet- I know I did it myself! It is a sad fact that diets don't work, at least not for the large majority of those people who really need help to lose weight. In University run trials of popular diets, with all the professional support they offer, the dropout rate is between 20 and 50 per cent and for those people working from a book at home it is going to be a lot higher. There are a number of diets which were developed by physicians who specialize in weight control and treating the associated diseases which go along with overweight such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, stroke and heart attack. Sadly these too don't suit everyone and they tend come from two different theoretical perspectives, low carbohydrate on the one hand and low fat on the other, each accusing the other of being wrong and dangerous. Like the big-enders and little-enders of Lilliput they see no common ground between them and do nothing to close the gap. For the person who has tried diets and failed, and just wants clear advice, this can be very confusing and disheartening . 'Your Future- Fat of Slim? Fit or Healthy?' closes that gap. It tells you why and how different diets work, what they all have in common, why they eventually fail and how to keep them working. It explains the importance of individual differences in response to particular diets and shows how apparently antithetical diets work through the same natural weight control mechanism of the body and helps sufferers find the right diet for them. This book explains that overweight is not due to gluttony or laziness, as it is often portrayed, but to a malfunction of the hormone insulin due to the excessive exposure to processed carbohydrates in our modern world. Control the insulin disorder and weight is lost and vitality restored. Fat people are ill not scoundrels. It includes a full copy of The New FreeWeight System (NFS), an updated and streamlined version of the ' FreeWeight System'. The NFS is a 'whole life' low glucose load diet (low GL) which combines the best of low carb and low fat diets and now integrates the principles of the current fashionable fasting diets. It is designed to fit more closely with modern life by being flexible enough to allow the odd indiscretion and eliminate the idea of 'failure', the Achilles Heel of most diets. The aim of the NFS is to teach the practitioner to assess the impact of any meal on their blood glucose levels and eat only those foods which keep their blood glucose low and control their insulin response. In this way they can eat out or in and still be in control of their weight. For this reason there are no recipes in the book. The individual designs their own recipes or selects a a meal in a restaurant, in accordance with low GL principles and to suit their pallet. It can also form a bridge between the low carb and low fat types, allowing the reader, trying to find the right diet, to move from one to the other easily while still maintaining control of their weight. Written by a clinical psychologist who has looked at this as both a scientist and a sufferer it is a clear statement of what the field of weight control is or should be now and where the future lies. It carves through the poor science surrounding this area of research and gives the reader an understanding of the dark forces which are working to keep the public eating a potentially lethal cocktail of fattening food. It will enable the reader to benefit from new information which may only be part of standard medical practice in five to ten years time.
