About the Book

DO YOU LOVE WEDDINGS? DOES THE image of a bride walking down the aisle in a beautiful gown, with a little flower girl scattering petals in the air before her, and the groom looking like a movie star in his tuxedo, and two people uttering the words "I do," fill you with a warm glow? Do you get a thrill thinking about smiling families, couples dancing happily, tall wedding cakes, and rooms filed with beautiful floral arrangements? Can you see yourself, standing off to one side of a chapel, a ballroom, or garden, smiling with the knowledge that you made it all happen? If the answers are yes, yes, and yes, then becoming a wedding planner is clearly a career for you! Best of all, there are many new opportunities to join this profession. There are over two million weddings every year in the United States alone. While a quarter of all wedding planners have been in business for 10 years or more, about half have entered the field only in the last four years. In other words, much of the competition is still relatively new to the game. You can declare yourself a wedding planner without having to be licensed or approved by any government agencies. Most participants in the field do urge would-be wedding planners to go through a certification course of the type offered by organizations like the Association of Bridal Consultants or the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada. You will be able to feature that you are certified in your marketing and promotional literature, and on your website and Facebook page. You may take your certification and plunge right into looking for clients or you may want to learn more through hands-on experience. There are jobs available with other wedding planners, but more likely you will spot opportunities at hotels, resorts, and convention centers. Wedding planners are considered in the career category of meeting, convention, and event planners. You can gain experience that will be very relevant to wedding planning working to organize other types of events. The same general duties apply: clarifying a client's needs and desires, putting together a team of product and service suppliers, managing the set up in the selected venue, supervising all details on event day. You may not be interested in owning your own business. In that case, there are hotels, resorts, country clubs, banquet halls, arts centers, cruise lines, travel services, and even universities that host weddings and very often employ a wedding planner as part of their overall hospitality team. In fact, one of the fastest growing types of weddings is the destination wedding, defined as any wedding that takes place over 100 miles from the bride's home. Travel services and cruise lines are going to be seeing more wedding business in the future, and if you love the idea of going to beautiful, romantic, exotic places (which is where most destination weddings take place), then you could actively seek to work in that niche category. Other specialties on the rise include same sex weddings and second marriages.
