Eh ! Oui, pourquoi pas la Mort ? Nous devenons si savants tous les jours. Je vous dis que nous arriverons à le tirer de nos flancs l'être entrevu, le Surhomme idéalement amoral et maître de tous les secrets de la Nature. Lui, il tuera d'un regard; et certes tous nos efforts, toutes nos douleurs seront largement payées par un tel résultat. Nous avons des philosophes comme des savants, car rien ne nous manque; ils sont chargés d'envelopper dans de la dialectique nos vanités et nos illusions; en général ils s'acquittent assez bien de leur tâche. Cependant quelques-uns détonnent leur noire humeur nous amuse; un grain d'originalité n'est pas pour nous déplaire. Au fond, nous savons bien que l'optimisme est la santé et la vérité, que son contraire n'est qu'une maladie. Il est vrai que notre religion dominante, le christianisme, n'est pas optimiste, mais nous n'en sommes pas les inventeurs et nous le comprenons si peu; c'est à nos yeux un culte comme un autre rendu à un potentat orgueilleux, cruel et capricieux, tout notre portrait, qui réside quelque part dans les nuages.

En Orient, on est revenu de tant de naïve exubérance. On y accepte la vie, on en remplit tous les devoirs, on proclame qu'il en faut passer la torche de main en main, mais on ne lui demande pas ce qu'elle ne peut donner, le bonheur, alors qu'une analyse et un examen superficiels démontrent qu'elle n'est pas faite pour cela. L'oriental sent vivement ce qu'exprime si bien le proverbe arabe il vaut mieux être assis que debout, couché qu'assis, mort que vivant.
