¿Qué soy? ¿De dónde vengo? ¿Hacia dónde voy? ¿Cuál es la razón de mis circunstancias vivenciales? Preguntas existenciales que todos nos hacemos. Hasta el siglo XIX sólo teníamos dos posibles respuestas: la ofrecida por el Modelo Espiritualista Místico y la ofrecida por su contraparte el Modelo Materialista Científico. El Modelo Espiritualista Místico, representado en nuestro hemisferio occidental por las religiones judeo-cristianas, nos define dogmáticamente como un cuerpo con un Espíritu. El Espíritu es creado en el mismo instante que el cuerpo es concebido, y luego de esa sola existencia, sobrevive a la muerte del cuerpo físico, quedando su suerte irrevocablemente fijada eternamente: cielo o infierno. Este modelo resulta insuficiente cuando se busca conocer qué es el alma, cuál es su naturaleza, cómo es su estructura y cómo ésta, siendo imponderable, puede unirse y accionar sobre algo ponderable y grosero como el cuerpo físico. Además, este modelo, y sus religiones representativas, al creerse poseedoras de la verdad absoluta como consecuencia del dogma de la revelación y de su origen divino, rechazan la metodología y el conocimiento científico y crean un campo de conocimientos estático, cerrado e impositivo desligado totalmente de los avances del conocimiento humano. Como consecuencia de esto, pronto el Modelo Espiritualista Místico empezó a resultar insuficiente para el hombre contemporáneo quien empezaba a ver los hechos reales de la vida y el universo bajo un nuevo crisol: el método científico. El Modelo Materialista Científico surge, cuando el hombre establece que él es capaz de conocer la verdad por investigación propia, utilizando su inteligencia y raciocinio a través del método científico, imponiendo el principio de que la verdad no debe estar fundamentada en la fe ciega sino en hechos demostrables. La explicación que nos ofrece este modelo sobre qué somos se resume de la siguiente manera: Yo, el ser humano, soy únicamente un ente físico y mis actividades mentales (pensamiento, emociones, memoria y los actos voluntarios) son procesos físico-químicos que se originan exclusivamente en mi órgano llamado cerebro; siendo yo materia únicamente, mi vida se limita al periodo entre mi nacimiento y mi muerte, después del cual dejo de existir; soy nada antes y nada después de esta única vida. Para el siglo XIX surge un tercer modelo, poco conocido aún por la cultura contemporánea: el Modelo Espiritualista Científico Espírita. Él nos define como un Espíritu con un cuerpo y es capaz de explicar de forma simple, coherente y lógica los hechos de la conducta humana, aún los inexplicados por el Modelo Materialista-Científico, demostrando ser de mayor amplitud en su cobertura. Es por esta razón que está siendo considerado por la intelectualidad actual como el mejor, a pesar de haber sido rechazado a priori por la misma ciencia y las grandes potencias religiosas. En los capítulos de este libro discutiremos en más detalles este modelo.
About the Author: Pablo Serrano-Lebrón nació en Puerto Rico. Bachiller en Ciencias y Artes, Pedagogo y Doctor en Medicina. Fue criado desde niño dentro de la filosofía espírita. Al momento de publicar este libro se desempeña como Presidente del Instituto Kardeciano Francisco Simonet de Humacao, Puerto Rico. Ocupó el cargo de Tercer Vicepresidente de la Confederación Espírita Panamericana (CEPA) y fue el Presidente (fundador) del Consejo de Relaciones Espírita Puertorriqueño (CREPU). Se ha distinguido como conferenciante internacional, participando en programas de radio y televisión, divulgando la doctrina espírita. Fundador del Simposio Kardeciano del Este, programa anual de conferencias dedicado a la difusión de la doctrina espírita en su acepción de ciencia, filosofía y moral.
