Publicada en 1941, Yawar Fiesta (Fiesta de Sangre) es la primera novela del escritor peruano José María Arguedas. Es una de las obras más representativas del movimiento literario indigenista. Aquí Arguedas hace una fusión estilizada de la lengua castellana y quechua. Pretende describir con la mayor verosimilitud posible la situación de los pueblos andinos del Perú, en particular los pueblos de la Sierra Centro y Sur.

La obra corresponde a la realidad que reinaba a lo largo de la primera mitad del siglo XX. En dicha época en el Perú había una marcada discriminación racial, entre los terratenientes (patrones) y los campesinos. Así la oligarquía económica trató de imponer sus costumbres sobre los pueblos autóctonos del Perú. Mientras, los indígenas pugnaban por mantener su propia idiosincrasia.

El nudo narrativo de Yawar Fiesta es el conflicto cultural que sucede cuando el pueblo de Puquio (sierra al sur del Perú) desea celebrar su tradicional corrida de toros andina (turupukllay) para las Fiestas Patrias en la década de los años treinta del siglo XX. Sin embargo, las nuevas autoridades han recibido una circular de parte del gobierno para evitar esta corrida por considerarla una tradición bárbara.

La única opción para los comuneros es aceptar una corrida a la manera española con la participación de un torero proveniente de la capital peruana.

Según los críticos, es la más lograda de las novelas de Arguedas, desde el punto de vista formal. Se aprecia el esfuerzo del autor por ofrecer una versión lo más auténtica posible de la vida andina, sin recurrir a los convencionalismos y al paternalismo de la anterior literatura indigenista de denuncia.


En la novela Yawar fiesta (Fiesta sangrienta) culmina el proceso de búsqueda de un estilo en que el milenario idioma quechua lograra transir el castellano y convertirse en un instrumento de expresión suficiente y libre para reflejar las hazañas, el pensamiento, los amores y odios del pueblo andino de ascendencia hispano-india. No solo de la multitud de habla quechua monolingüe sino la de los herederos de los conquistadores que en cuatro siglos fueron medularmente influidos por el universo andino vivo y palpitante en la lengua indígena.

En esta novela podrá el lector sentir, podrá olfatear y aun confundirse, compenetrarse, con las tan profundas y originalísimas confluencias y conflictos entre lo europeo y la más antigua civilización andina. Esas confluencias y conflictos están vívidos en los acontecimientos narrados, muy singularmente épicos, como singularísimos son los agentes que desencadenan esas aventuras.
