En síntesis, la obra refleja los muchos conflictos emocionales de un niño que nace accidentalmente en 1937, en Cuba, y crece en un país evidentemente obsesionado por un machismo exagerado y totalmente hipócrita. Pronto identifica su preferencia sexual y sufre los traumas naturales que se manifiestan en cualquier ser humano al no poder reprimir su instinto y ser consciente de que defrauda las expectativas de sus padres. Simultáneamente, la novela refleja la evolución de una nación muy joven, corrompida políticamente desde el momento en que se independizó de España, en la cual se enriquecen los más hábiles e inescrupulosos. La trama cubre un período de veinticuatro años (1937-1961), refleja la etapa difícil que también le tocó vivir a Cuba durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial (pocas veces mencionada), y está narrada en primera persona. Ya en la adolescencia el protagonista se ve severamente afectado por conflictos familiares que culminan en el divorcio de sus padres, el fanatismo religioso de una abuela evangélica que se hace cargo de él, la influencia de sus emergentes convicciones políticas en contra la dictadura de Fulgencio Batista en Cuba, y su necesidad de refugiarse en la promis-cuidad sexual... siempre con el anhelo de encontrar el amor homosexual sublime que ha leído en los libros de Carlo Coccioli, Gore Vidal y Roger Peyrefitte, y el cual cada vez se le hace más escurridizo. Son muchos los incidentes y personajes que mueven la trama de "Yagruma", desde luego, y varias las situaciones en las que los padres del protagonista intentan reprimir --en vano-- la atracción que siente por otros hombres: desde ser sometido a la terapia siquiátrica a base de electrochoques (incipiente en aquella época), hasta ser enviado a España después de descubrir su tormentosa relación con un sacerdote jesuita en un prestigioso colegio de La Habana, del cual fue expulsado bochornosamente. El protagonista avanza en su historia mostrando sus numerosos traumas personales y familiares hasta que en enero de 1959 triunfa la revolución de Fidel Castro y transforma radicalmente la estructura política, social y económica de la sociedad cubana. La ambivalencia de los líderes revolucionarios afecta profundamente a muchas personas que lucharon contra la dictadura batistiana. Así comienza una diáspora de cubanos, incluyendo el exilio obligado de varios miembros de la familia del protagonista, dividida entre adeptos y enemigos del proceso revolucionario. El protagonista de "Yagruma" llega a sentirse repudiado en su propia patria por no aceptar los preceptos de la revolución. Al exiliarse su padre, se ve obligado a responsabilizarse de su compleja familia. Venciendo obstáculos de todo tipo finalmente logra escapar de Cuba nadando la contaminada bahía de La Habana hasta abordar un barco español fondeado en la rada, con la ayuda de un marinero búlgaro de origen sefardí que ha sido su amante más reciente. Así --como polizón-- logra llegar a las Islas Canarias (Tenerife) en febrero de 1961, sólo unas semanas antes de que se produjera la fallida invasión de Bahía de Cochinos.
