Aristoteles vermochte dieser Lehre keine fruchtbare Seite abzugewinnen. Es könnte scheinen, als habe er sie nicht ver stehen wollen; so oft er auch das 31: und c'z'1tuoov erwahnt und bekämpft, wir würden aus seinen Schriften kaum eine Ahnung davon gewinnen, was jene Begriffe für Platon bedeutet haben. Xenokrates nahm die Lehre voll in sein System auf. Phantasie voll, wie Platon, ohne doch wie dieser Dichter zu sein, begnügte er sich nicht mit den abstracten Ausdrücken. Er fafste das Eins als Einheit, das 311 als povdg und wenn es zweifelhaft bleiben kann, oh Platon in streng wissenschaftlicher Darstellung sein oberstes Princip als persönlichen Gott gefafst hat, nannte Xeno krotes seine Movais ausdrücklich Zeus, den obersten Gott, der im Himmel thront, den Geist, den Vater. Neben ihn setzte er als weibliche Gottheit, als Mutter und Seele des Alle die dvoig. Er dachte damit endgültig Fragen zu erledigen, auf die Platon bis in seine letzten Jahre die Antwort gesucht hatte: Wenn nur die Seele bewegen, nur sie wirken kann, wie darf dann die von Gott geschaffene reingotfliche Weltseele das Böse bewirken? Gicht es vielleicht auch eine böse Weltseele neben der guten? Xenokrates hielt an der ursprünglichen Lehre Platons von der einen Weltseele fest. Aber diese Weltseele ist an Reinheit dern nicht ebenbürtig; sie trägt in sich auch das &'1tszgov oder die unbegrenzte Zweiheit und ist von deren Einflusse nicht gänzlich frei. So spielt sich, phantastisch angesehen, in ihr der ewige Kampf zwischen Gntem und Bösem ab. Das Unbegrenzte wird zum bösen Principe, das dem Guten entgegensteht; mythisch dargestellt, ist es der Typhon, der mit Osiris um die Herrschaft ringt; die Weltseele, die weibliche Gottheit, ist Isis, die zwar in steter Sehnsucht dem ehelichen Gemahl Osiris sich zuneigt, dem Bösen aber sich nicht völlig zu entziehen vermag. Sie, die in sich das Weltgebäude umfafst, hat als solche Verwandtschaft mit dem aufnehmenden Principe des platonischen Timäus, dem Orte der Sinnendinge.
