About the Book

"The Recipe to Write-Handed Poetry" Layer'd my blackness my phatness like ripe, green-peppered memories simmering with tender onion-type stories Tears of glee and misery fall upon . . . Layer'd Psalms and anointing of heads Choir robes and sick beds like violet laced cloths upon dresses, deemed too short like the whimpered prayer before the abort Layer'd With mommas and daddies who dance together still With wills already done and promises fulfilled loving the black boys returning from stores loving the brown girls just learning to speak English lovers together, forty plus, "post-crush" loving rush hours that come right on time Layer'd from the glossy book covers flyy brothers and society's "others" learning how to read to crease yellowed gems packed with words from busy craniums like traffic on a Friday like liquor on a Sunday Writing poetry is icing... Life is cake... Don't jump while it's cookin' ...then you may taste
About the Author: A. Dene`e is a proud Detroit native. Though she fell in love with writing as a child, she committed herself to the craft of poetry after seeing Dr. Maya Angelou lecture and perform at a university in Michigan. A. Dene`e earned her degree from Wayne State University, where she was published as a Ronald E. McNair scholar. A TRIO alum, A. Dene`e decided to give back through education as a reading/writing lab instructor in the Upward Bound program. After an "incubating experience," A. Dene`e began performing at Mellow Soul Tuesdays, where she became a participant in the resurgence of soul art in Gainesville, Florida and was encouraged to seek publication. In 2015, she co-founded "Generation Soul," which offers tutoring, in addition to free poetry and open mic workshops at local libraries. She is active in the Sickle Cell community and leads in the effort to raise awareness, increase research and funding, and improve the quality of medical care provided to people and families living with the disease. Write-Handed Poetry is her first published collection of poetry.
