De todos os acontecimentos ocorridos no âmbito das tensas relações entre o governo dos EUA e os nativos americanos durante o século XIX, o mais notório e marcante foi o que é atualmente conhecido como o Massacre de Wounded Knee. Tecnicamente, foi o último confronto armado entre guerreiros Sioux e o exército americano e marcou o fim da resistência efectiva de qualquer bando Sioux, mas o que realmente aconteceu é muito mais controverso.

No final de dezembro de 1890, um grupo de cerca de 350 Sioux Lakota, liderado por Big Foot e Spotted Elk, foi escoltado até à zona de Wounded Knee Creek e ordenado a estabelecer um acampamento nessa zona, mas temendo outra possível revolta, apesar de o bando ser composto maioritariamente por mulheres, cerca de 500 soldados do Exército dos EUA do 7° Regimento de Cavalaria, liderados pelo Major Samuel M. Dispararam rapidamente, mas pareceram-me apenas alguns segundos até não restar um único ser vivo à nossa frente; guerreiros, squaws, crianças, póneis e cães... todos caíram perante o fogo sem pontaria. O ataque resultante mataria a maioria dos nativos americanos, incluindo Big Foot e Spotted Elk. Cerca de 30 soldados do Exército dos EUA foram mortos e cerca de 40 ficaram feridos, quase todos por fogo amigo no caótico tiroteio corpo a corpo. Dos nativos americanos mortos, a maioria foi morta de imediato, mas os feridos foram deixados no chão gelado para perecerem na noite gelada.
