About the Book

This is my story about how I was blatantly ripped off by a private career college. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was reluctantly forced to take a gamble on attending such a school. If I had any shot at a middle class life in the years to come, I was left with no choice but to go this route. Being a member of Generation X, becoming an adult in the 1990's meant that you had to get a post-secondary education to have any shot at climbing the social ladder. Before I enrolled at a private career college, I had already obtained an undergraduate science degree. Even with good grades, I was declined for enrollment for an Honors Degree which was needed to attend Graduate School. A Graduate Degree was needed if I had any chance of getting a job with my university education. After a failed attempt to appeal this decision, I would go on to graduate with a general Bachelor of Science degree which left me with no employment opportunities. This would be a devastating blow considering the time and money invested thus far.I would go on to explore other options that were much more practical. After all, look at where following my bliss got me! Absolutely nowhere! There was also student loan debt to the tune of thousands of dollars that has the potential to ruin my finances. I knew that I had to be extra careful with the career stream I was going to choose. The explosion of the Information Technology industry around this time piqued my interest. It felt like an almost surefire direction to go. But, as mentioned before, I was left with no choice to place my blind trust in a private career college. I went off of some research and word of mouth through others I knew that went this route.Problems emerged almost immediately after the start of classes. Out of date equipment, instructor turnover, and instructors with poor qualifications would be prevalent. Most of the administration and staff equally left something to be desired. Changes to government legislation pertaining to student loans could become enormous headaches if graduates do not become gainfully employed. During my tenure at this school, and after graduation, I would find myself caught up in a pack of lies and deceit. On the job hunt, I was rejected repeatedly by prospective employers. Following up with them would paint a bleak picture that employers were not fond of private career college credentials from job seekers who also lacked work experience.Knowing that the labor market had this viewpoint, it dumbfounded me how this broken and corrupt industry was allowed to operate in the first place. The bureaucratic system was supposed to be keeping private career colleges in check to ensure that graduates are equipped with the skills that employers were demanding. The ball was dropped big time and graduates in the thousands, along with industry leaders, were looking for answers. As typical with elected government officials, the buck gets passed onto the students almost exclusively.I got a raw deal and I was ticked off! In the two decades since I graduated from a private career college, I have yet to be hired for a job that requires more than high school graduation. After a long and painful job hunt that yielded no job offers in the I.T. industry, I just packed it in! I cut my losses! Lastly, I was stuck with a worthless piece of paper that was my diploma from that very school that had the nerve to call themselves a cutting edge career college.
