Excerpt from The Works of the Emperor Julian, and Some Pieces of the Sophist Libanius, Vol. 2 of 2: Translated From the Greek Vol. II. fl, Of the Epifiles of julian, the nine firft were printed in Greek, with other Epifiles by various hands, by Aldus, Rom. 4to. And afterwards in Greek and Latin, at Geneva, 1606, folio. The xth was preferved by Socrates in his Hifiory, III. 3. The xxth, and thofe that follow, as far as the xnvuth, were in like manner publithed among the Epifllesof various writers. The axth was 'taken from Sozomen, v. 16. The Lth, Lift, and Lud were firft publtihed in Greek by Peter Martinius, together with the Mifopogon, and the other Epifiles, illuftrated by a Latin tranflation, Paris, 1567 and 1583, 8vo. Petau there fore firfi tranflated t'hofe three, and alfo the liiicl, and the following, as far as the L'vnth, which, together with the Epii'tle of Gallus to Julian, Bonaventure Vulcanius pub liflied at Leyden, 1597, rzmo. At the end of the Epiflles' and Problems of Theophylaé'tus Simocatta. The lviiith and tth, but doubtfully blended together, were firfi publiihed by Nicholas Rigalt, who alfo added a tranflation, at the end of his Fumu Pamfitzczmi, Paris, xbot, 4to. But. In the edition of Petau, by the advice of Rigalt himfelf, it was divided into two, both mutilated, the former having no conclufion, and the latter no beginning. At length the former was fupplied from a ms. By the learned and ingenious Lewis Anthony Mttra'tori, in'his Xue'ca'ara 'gm'ca, Padua, 1709, 4to. The th and the two following were firft publifhed by Petau, from a copy of an old ms. Lent him by Patricius Junius. The Lxutd, which Martinius and Petau have given in Greek only, but very imperfeé't and incorrect; ezekiel'spanheim amended and fupplted from the ms. Of Allatius, and firfi added a Latin verfion, Muratori has alfo publiflied three other Epil'tles of julian, the tvth, vth, and ninth, from the fame ms.
