About the Author: During his career, John Smithman was a photographer, a pilot, a Rotarian, a Toastmaster, and a magician. He followed four careers as an airline entrepreneur, a university administrator, a corporate trainer, a coach and an author. At the early age of 11, John learned important career lessons from his mom, as she demonstrated basic leadership principles of recognition and reward for the champions at her weekly Bridge parties. Each week, Mom would find a reason to offer each guest her personal praise with a token of her esteem at the end of the evening. John found that similar strategies worked well in the workplace too. As he began looking for and finding behaviors to praise, he coined the mantra, "Pay Attention to What You Want More Of." As a corporate coach, John searches for the simple secrets that exist at the core of workplace successes. Then he shares it with those who can benefit from these simple rules of work. For example, he spent ten years developing a simple method for revealing the natural fit of people to their jobs, their co-workers, and their working environments. He calls it the Champion Style Map. John learned to apply the Five Human Needs model to find the good reasons behind a person's bad behaviors. He established the TASTE code for identifying ideal employees. And he developed and used the Life Cycle of the Employee Model to conquer employee turnover and substantially increase the profits of a local manufacturing client. These are practical and beneficial applications of his workplace theories. John Smithman is both a student and a teacher of workplace dynamics. As he moves toward his retirement years, John has wanted to record what he has learned about the workplace so that he can share the benefits of these basics with managers beyond his local Vancouver area. His books are designed and priced for worldwide workers who want to be "workplace champions by example."
