About the Book

The verb "remember" in its various tenses is very well documented in the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments. In fact, this verb, in its various forms, appears in 183 Bible passages: 150 in the Old Testament and 33 in the New (according to the Nuova Riveduta ). All the passages which refer to it will be examined in their context to better understand the message that the Word of God communicates to us. To better understand this message, we thought it best to divide the passages into eight chapters which assemble the seventeen grammatical forms of the verb "remember" used in the sacred text, so as to render our understanding of the text more natural. At the same time, readers will have before them the various aspects of how the Bible sorts out the subject. This, of course, while taking into account and giving due consideration to the Scriptural admonition not to forget important events in our Christian experience, especially in regard to what God has done in our lives. Without going into specific details, man is usually led by a natural inclination to forget certain things in life, especially when it comes to some unhappy incident or experience. Sometimes, experiences have been painful and have left scars in our lives, both in terms of our thoughts, as well as in regard to our behavior. Of course, we cannot deny that there are events in our lives and our Christian experience that are best forgotten. We think of what Paul said for example: Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13-14) The often repeated proverb: "A mill cannot grind with water that is past" is true in some respects. In this case, thinking of things that are behind us without looking forward to what lies ahead, is not only a waste of time, but also represents a lack of vision for a better future. For a Christian and follower of Jesus Christ, not having hope for a better future certainly does not represent progress in the Christian walk, but rather is a step backward. Our Lord, Jesus Christ, exhorts us to have faith in God and also in Him, remembering not only that He will return again to receive His own, but also that He has gone to prepare a place for us, so that we can be where He is (John 14:1-3). There are, however, things that we should "remember" and never forget; especially things the Lord has done for us and things His Word speaks to us through the years. We should remember them, not only to express our gratitude, but also to appreciate them and set them as sign posts along our Christian path, both for ourselves and as a good example for others. This is what we propose to do in our study as we review the many biblical texts that speak of "remembering." Therefore, the best that we can wish for is that those who read this work will find treasure for themselves.
