About the Book

Naast het Europa van de handelaren, de technici en de wetenschappers, dat geleidelijk gestalte krijgt, bestaat er een essentieel Europa dat in feite stiefmoederlijk wordt bahandeld, en dat is het Europa van de burgers. En toch wensen allen, om te beginnen de politici, de opbloei van dit Europa. Want dit Europa is de grondslag en het ferment voor de Europese Unie. Hoe moeten we het aanleggen om de solitariteit en het besef van de ons zo dierbare Europese identiteit te ontwikkelen? Tot wie anders moeten we ons richten dan tot de jeugd, en dus tot het onderwijs?
De instellingen van de Europese Gemeenschappen hebben kennis gegeven van hun voornemen om Europa ook op te bouwen in het onderwijs, om de Europese dimensie ervan te versterken. Op dit gebied moet er een grote leemte gevuld worden. Het Europa van het onderwijs moet nog verrijzen, we werken nu nog aan de eerste grondslagen.
Vandaar het belang om de leerkrachten en de leerlingen in het middelbaar onderwijs van de twaalf landen van de Gemeenschap een gemeenschappelijke bron van informatie aan te bieden, die hoofdzakelijk handelt over de Europese identiteit en waarin de grondgedachten en de hoofdlijnen van de Europese beschaving worden belicht.
Om beter in te spelen op het huidige beleid van de Europese Gemeenschap, wenst dit boek de in de verschillende nationale onderwijsstelsels onderwezen programma's niet te vervangen. Het dient beschouwd te worden als een homogene en voor iedereen gelijke aanvulling op deze programma's, als een bijkomend middel om Europa beter te leren kennen en lief te hebben.
Het interdisciplinaire karakter dat de redactie van dit werk heeft geleid, en de meertaligheid die het een Europese bestemming geeft (het boek verschijnt tegelijkertijd in verschillende talen), willen het Europese ideaal en de culturele dimensie van Europa zo goed mogelijk dienen door terug te grijpen naar de oorsprong en via het verleden een licht te werpen op het heden en de vooruitzichten voor de toekomst.
