About the Book

The Word of Lalla the Prophetess is a book written by Richard Carnac Temple that explores the life and teachings of Lalla Ded, a 14th-century Kashmiri mystic and poetess. Lalla Ded, also known as Lalla Arifa, was a remarkable figure in the history of Kashmiri literature and Sufism. She was born into a Brahmin family but later renounced her caste and became a devotee of Shiva. Her poetry, which is written in the Kashmiri language, reflects her spiritual journey and her deep insights into the nature of reality. In this book, Temple provides a detailed account of Lalla Ded's life and teachings, drawing on a range of sources including her poetry, biographical accounts, and historical records. He explores the themes of love, devotion, and detachment that are central to Lalla Ded's philosophy, and examines the influence of Hinduism and Islam on her thought. Temple also discusses the social and cultural context in which Lalla Ded lived, including the impact of the Muslim conquest of Kashmir and the rise of Sufism. The Word of Lalla the Prophetess is a fascinating and insightful book that sheds light on the life and work of one of the most important mystics and poets of Kashmir. It will appeal to anyone interested in Sufism, poetry, and the spiritual traditions of South Asia.1924. This work contains the sayings of Lal Ded or Lal Diddi of Kashmir (Granny Lal), known also as Laleshwari, Lalla Yogishwari and Lalishri, between 1300 and 1400 AD. They are done into English verse from the Lalla-Vakyani or Lal-Wakhi and annotated. The authoress of the sayings, as a wandering ascetic and devoted follower of the Shaiva Yoga form of the religion of the Hindus, obtained such a hold on the people of the country that her verses have become a household word. Her songs illustrate her religion on its popular side, though they are not a systematic exposition of Shaivism on the lines laid down by the theologians who preceded her. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
