Nimmt man dieses Zitat ernst und denkt es weiter, so wird ersichtlich, warum Virtuosen, Olympiagewinner und Wissenschaftsexperten viele Jahre des Lernens und Übens darauf verwenden mussten, um an den Zenit ihres Könnens anzugelangen, der ihnen eben jenen Ruf des Einzigartigen verleiht. Aber auch wenn es "nur" darum geht, eine Fremdsprache zu erlernen oder ein schwerverständliches Fachbuch durchzuarbeiten, müssen gewisse Anforderungen vom Lerner erfüllt werden, um ausdauernd voranzuschreiten und nicht wie es Rousseau sagt: "Von der Natur und von den Menschen auf entgegengesetzte Bahnen gezogen, gezwungen, bald diesen, bald jenen Antrieben nachzugeben, lassen wir uns von einer Verquickung beider leiten und kommen so weder zu dem einen noch zu dem anderen Ziele. Solcherart geschlagen und schwankend das ganze Leben hindurch, beendigen wir es, ohne mit uns selbst einig geworden zu sein, ohne weder uns selbst noch anderen genutzt zu haben." Inhalt dieser Abhandlung soll es sein, in einem ersten Schritt darzulegen, wie der Begriff des Willens hier verstanden werden soll (II). Daran anschließend werden die notwendigen Voraussetzungen aufgezeigt, um Lernbemühungen über einen längeren Zeitraum aufrecht zu erhalten (III). Diese Voraussetzungen werden mit Erkenntnissen aus der Altersforschung gekoppelt, um zu zeigen, wie sich Willensanstrengungen im Alter verhalten können (IV).
