So wie wir haben auch die vor uns lebenden Menschen versucht, die physische Welt zu begreifen. Dabei ist in den fruhen Hochkulturen der forschende Geist nicht selten von den Gegebenheiten der naheren Umwelt ausgegangen, um sie analog auf jene fernen Bereiche zu ubertragen, die unseren funf Sinnen verborgen sind. Die Umwelt der alten Agypter war das Niltal, jene Fluaoase, die sich, flankiert von Wusten und Ge-birgen, weit uber tausend Kilometer lang zwischen dem ersten Katarakt bei Assuan und dem Mit-telmeer erstreckt. Daraus, daa die Sonne auf ihrer taglichen ost-westlichen Bahn das sud-nordlich ausgerichtete Niltal uberquerte, ergab sich das groae Ordnungsprinzip der vier Himmelsrichtungen. Darin gab es aber ratselhafte und besorgniserregende Erscheinungen: Welchen Weg nahm die Sonne in der Nacht? Warum verlagerte sie ihre tagliche Bahn im Winter nach Suden und im Sommer nach Norden? Konnte die Sonne eines Tages fur immer verschwinden? Welche Kraft hielt die wandernden Ge-stirne hoch oben am Himmel? Wer sorgte dafur, daa die lebenspendende Niluberschwemmung jedes Jahr wiederkam? Fur ihre Antworten haben die Agypter nicht nur ihre Umwelt herangezogen, sondern auch den menschlichen Korper und Dinge, die sie selbst geschaffen hatten, zum Beispiel Gebaude. Doch auch damit hatten sie keine Antworten gefunden, wenn sie nicht die Gotter als treibende Kraft hinter allen Dingen erkannt hatten. Mit den Gottern hauchten sie der Materie Leben ein und schufen das geistige Gebilde einer Welt, in der alles lebte, zyklisch verging und wiederkehrte, eine Welt voller Mythen, ein faszinierendes Zeugnis der menschlichen Phantasie, das noch heute die Fachleute und die Laien gleichermaaen in seinen Bann zieht. Viele der historischen Quellen zum Weltbild der Agypter entstammen dem Bereich des Toten-glaubens, was nicht uberraschen kann; denn ein Weiterleben nach dem Tode war eng mit der Frage verbunden, wo in der Welt es seinen Ort hatte. Die Quellen, teils Bilder teils Texte, reichen von der Fruhgeschichte uber die klassischen und spaten Epochen Altagyptens bis weit in die christliche Ara hinein. Die Quellen werden kommentiert, die Texte ubersetzt und mit Lautschrift versehen. Aufgegriffen werden auch interessante Fragestellun-gen der Sekundarliteratur, zum Beispiel diejenige, ob die Agypter von der Kugelgestalt der Erde gewuat hatten.
