About the Book

Witness- BWWM Contemporary Romance NovelEvette White, an African American nurse from the Bronx, is struggling to balance her work and taking care of her young son, DeShawn. A single mother aged 25; she is ambivalent towards romantic relationships despite the urging of her more open friends, especially Olivia "Ollie" Oregon, an excitable security guard at Chesterfield Bank with a carefree flair, articulate "Street" vibe, and an eye for easy cash. Evette's reluctance is fueled by her legal battles with her ex-boyfriend and father of DeShawn, Colin "Trick" Phillips, over the custody of their son. Trick is a Basketball star with the LA Lakers, and with his considerable financial means and his bullish team of lawyers, he is set to win it despite a history of abusive behavior. Public opinion is also heavily lopsided in Trick's favor due to aggressive PR activity and the legion of adoring fans. Evette does not stand a chance against him, and her attorney resigns over delinquent payments as well as the fact that the case is apparently headed towards a defeat that would not be good on his record and harm his reputation in the legal community.Evette hates how the whole case is putting her in public view; all she wants is a normal private life with her beloved son, away from the occasional stalking paparazzi and free from the hate from strangers she meets randomly - fans of Trick. Her attorney's resignation is devastating and is set to ruin her already precariously-balanced life.Just in time, Ben Hooper, a young Lawyer with very little experience, offers his services pro Bono. Evette is highly skeptical, not just of the chances of any success, but of his ability to even pose any serious challenge and commitment to her cause, as a white man in a place with tense race relations like Chicago. But she has no choice but to accept his offer as none else was forthcoming. After spending some time examining and discussing the case with her, Ben finds himself increasingly attached to both the case and Evette. He wins her trust with his passionate conduct in court, and his skill and brilliance are evident, including to Trick and his legal team, who had assumed victory certain and in short order. After he presents a good case to support the credibility of Evette's vital witnesses whose testimony of abusive and reckless behavior by Trick was the main wrecking ball, Ben secures an extension of the court's interest in the case, delaying Trick's victory lap and even evoking the possibility of the case turning around completely. Trick specifically target Ben, at first trying to buy him into being a partner with him, and eventually try to implicate him by denting his personality. Both attempts are rebuffed. Ben shows he is more resolute than his humble looks give off. While all of this goes on, Ben's romantic interest in Evette reaches a fever pitch. Evette reciprocates the attraction but is at first reluctant. However, their romance inevitably forces itself past her reluctance. They have also become a formidable team in court, and public opinion is beginning to turn in Evette's favor. However, just as the tide is set to turn, they face the biggest test yet in court. The new challenge is posed by a new, devastating witness for Trick and his lawyers- Ollie.WARNING: The short story book contains mature content and language intended for adult readers only!
