About the Book

This is a story about Union County, North Carolina, during the 1930s, at the depths of the Great Depression. It is also about the ugliness of men who took advantage of Negro people and treated them as chattel. It is a story about the wonderful growing love between Sarah Lynn and Clyde, who were coming of age at the time of this story. It is a story about a conjurer woman, Sudie, who set out to right a grievous wrong perpetrated by Leonard, a young man without a moral compass, who delighted in hurting people, but turned out to be a coward in the end. It is a story of the strong sense of faith in God that was prevalent at that time in small town America, and especially strong in Union County. It is about Orphey a strong and good man who, with the help of other good people, set out to right wrongs perpetrated on downtrodden people of that era. It is a snapshot of time during the 1930s in rural Union County written by a man whose telling reflects those times and the people he knew who were very similar to those depicted in this story.
About the Author: ABOUT THE AUTHOR ROBERT WEBB BRAME, SR. 1937 to 2011 Robert (Bob) Brame was born in 1937 in Charlotte, North Carolina. His father was an engineer with the North Carolina State Highway Department and his family lived in several cities during his childhood. He graduated from Central High School in Sanford, North Carolina and went on to earn a BA degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bob spent 34 years in the Welding Supply business as a salesman. After marrying Helen Ligon, they had four children. Bob was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He also loved people. He thought everyone he ever knew was exceptional. His faith and church activities were very important part of his life. After retiring he did volunteer work and took several classes on writing at Central Piedmont Community College. Then for a number of years he participated in a Monday afternoon writing group led by Barbara Lawing. He wrote this book while attending Barbara's group. Bob had many health problems the last few years of his life but still maintained his love of reading and of people. His interests were varied. He would have several books open on religion, history, philosophy and cowboy novels at the same time. Bob loved music too; his favorites were classical, church hymns and bluegrass. He passed away on February 23, 2011.
