Mit der Einfuhrung von Bildungsstandards und der Definition eines Kompetenzbereichs "Erkenntnisgewinnung" wurde der kompetenzorientierte Aufbau wissenschaftlicher Denk- und Arbeitsweisen bei Schulerinnen und Schulern zu einer Zielvorgabe fur den Chemieunterricht. Mit der Entwicklung, Anwendung und Evaluation eines Kompetenzstrukturmodells sowie eines modellbasierten Tests zur Kompetenzdiagnostik tragt die vorliegende Arbeit zur Weiterentwicklung dieses Kompetenzbereiches bei. Dabei operationalisiert das facherubergreifend angelegte Kompetenzstrukturmodell neun Teilkompetenzen und umfasst Aspekte verschiedener naturwissenschaftlicher Arbeitsweisen wie das Beobachten, Vergleichen, Ordnen, das Experimentieren und das Nutzen von Modellen. Auf dieser Grundlage werden die Ergebnisse dargestellt, die mit 90 kompetenzorientierten Testaufgaben in einer quantitativen Querschnittsstudie in der Doppeljahrgangsstufe 9 und 10 des Faches Chemie erzielt wurden. Die IRT-basierten Analysen belegen die psychometrische Qualitat des Tests und verweisen auf eine mehrdimensionale Struktur der Kompetenzen. Multivariate Zusammenhangsanalysen zeigen weiterhin, dass die Kompetenzen zu einem bedeutsamen Teil auf die kognitiven und affektiven Eigenschaften der Schulerinnen und Schuler und weniger auf schulisch-soziodemographische Indikatoren (Schulnoten, Geschlecht, Lernzeit fur Chemie oder sozio-kultureller Hintergrund) zuruckgefuhrt werden konnen. Diese Ergebnisse werden unter theoretischen, psychometrischen, fachdidaktischen und unterrichtspraktischen Aspekten diskutiert.
