About the Book

In a kingdom ruled by Maharaja Pariksit under the guidance of the brahmanas, the master of Kali Yuga was punished for causing pain to a cow and a bull. The punishment was necessary to ensure that Kali's influence did not enter the kingdom. Hearing about such a king whose activities were connected with Krsna was purifying and could drive out the ill effects of Kali from society.

Maharaja Pariksit perceived the influence of Kali within his kingdom and initiated a tour to defeat him. While touring, he heard the glories of his great relatives, the Pandavas. During his tour, Dharma, who was wandering in the form of a bull, questioned the earth, in the form of a cow, about her miserable condition. The earth replied that her misery was caused by her separation from Krsna's presence and by an increase of Kali's influence due to Krsna's absence. Maharaja Pariksit then arrived and listened to their conversation.

Kali continued because no ksatriya king was present to suppress its irreligious activities. Such a king rules according to the scriptures and never allows offenseless citizens to be disturbed by irreligious offenders. Sometimes, to prove a point, as the Lord did when He put Bhumi and Dharma in trouble to prove that Maharaja Pariksit was the ideal executive head, the Lord uses His devotees and even causes them distress.

Maharaja Pariksit challenged and threatened the low-class man, dressed as a king, who was beating the cow and the bull. He then questioned and consoled the cow and the bull. After hearing the bull's response, Maharaja Pariksit recognized him as the personality of religion and began to reply to him. As he was preparing to kill Kali, Kali surrendered. Although Maharaja Pariksit spared Kali's life, he banished him. Kali requested a place where he could fearlessly live, and Maharaja Pariksit gave him permission to dwell in places with which brahmanas and sannyasi's should never come in contact.

In the end, Maharaja Pariksit re-established religion and began his reign in his kingdom.

Maharaja Pariksit insulted the sage Samika Rsi by placing a dead snake around the meditating sage's neck. Samika Rsi's son, Srngi, cursed Maharaja Pariksit to die in seven days for the insult. Samika Rsi lamented when he heard what his son had done and prayed to the Supreme Lord to forgive his son for his foolishness.

Maharaja Pariksit fasted and sat down at the bank of the Ganges to prepare for his death. After hearing of the great king's plight, many rsis arrived, and Maharaja Pariksit welcomed them. The sages glorified the king's decision and Maharaja Pariksit inquired from them about the duty of one who is about to die. After Maharaja Pariksit made his inquiry, the exalted sage Sukadeva Goswami approached the assembly. Maharaja Pariksit offered him respect, glorified him, and then inquired about the duty of one about to die.
