CHARLIE'S divorce was final a year ago. She decides to travel up wine country alone, taking a sabbatical from her interior design company in Los Angeles. While there, she meets SAM near his vineyard, a vague old acquaintance, who spontaneously asks her over for a glass of wine.
Sam is also divorced, and feels a kindred spirit in Charlie. They bond over several days while she stays in the area until his pre-teen sons, CONNER and COLE arrive from summer camp. After spending time as a houseguest with the small family unit and allowing their attraction to grow, Charlie dissembles that her marriage crumbled because she is infertile, which led her ex-husband PETER to sleep with another woman and then eventually ask for a divorce.
Once she's spent a week at the vineyard and has learned about Sam's passion for garagiste winemaking, Charlie still feels that she should leave Sam to continue his peaceful his life. Sam enjoys her company and the effect she has on his sons, and he persuades her to return to attend an upcoming neighborhood party.
However, their reunion is cut immediately short when Sam is bit by a black widow spider. Charlie is forced to play nursemaid and to handle the ranch, vineyard and horses while Sam recovers. He has not only an allergic reaction to the spider bite, but to the medicines as well. Slightly under the influence of wine and drugs, Sam admits that he loves Charlie. She reacts by putting distance between them and returning to Los Angeles.
While in LA, Charlie runs into Peter, who is there with his girlfriend. Peter admits that he misses his original marriage with Charlie and is disillusioned by what he had perceived as a perfect new life that would align with his goals. After reflection, Charlie realizes that her marriage was flawed from the start, and decides to finally tell Sam that she loves him. The two fall into a comfortable existence on the ranch for some time, learning to co-parent Sam's sons.
Sam decides to ask Charlie to move in with him. She hesitates, but then discovers she has skipped a period. She is worried that it is a harbinger of another medical issue. Sam holds out hope that somehow she's pregnant. When a doctor confirms that Charlie's starting menopause early. Her old insecurities pile on once more, causing her to draw away from Sam.
Eventually, the pair recognizes that lack of communication and discussion of feelings was at the heart of their previous failed marriages. They decided to make a concerted effort to talk, and fall back into creating memories with winemaking, drinking and hosting dinner parties. As the year draws to a close, Sam determines he will make Charlie understand how much she means to him, proposing casually one evening. She accepts readily, to his surprise, and the two plan their impending union and how they'll break the exciting news to Cole and Conner.
