Dear old Southfields, such a trendy and stylish village, home to ambitious and happy people of all ages. This is the area where people organise Window Dressing Shows, acting just like a close family which seeks to be inclusive, recreational, and friendly, an area where people join in groups to plant trees near their front doors, to keep their gardens fresh, to ensure that all in the community are safe, and to share their healthy ideas to develop the district in a clean and responsible way.
No wonder houses in this area are so fervently sought! Even in 1945, when my parents found their beautiful first home together, Southfields was a very special village.
My memories of Southfields, right from the 1950s, have always been imbued with deep affection, an area with a hearty community, with all you could possibly need on a day-to-day basis, and so well-connected to nearby towns and the city.
I was born in Wimbledon Park Road, not far from the exciting Wimbledon Park, where my siblings and I spent many a happy afternoon, and where I learned to ride my first two-wheeler!.
Did you know that Capability Brown designed those beautiful grounds, the golf course, the fish-filled lake, and all the scenic grounds? Nowadays, parts of these areas are known as Henman Hill. And Murray Mound, during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. It was simply the sublime Wimbledon Park in my day! Once, the Pope arrived by helicopter in this park, and my mum was lucky enough to be there to see him! Dominus vobiscum!
I still feel a deep connection with dear old Southfields, accentuated because I taught at the local primary school as a newly qualified and enthusiastic young teacher in 1970.
Who could ask for more in their home village?
Southfields is an area to celebrate, and to keep special, so here is a good reason to record your happy times and to organise your life in this delightful Wimbledon Tennis Journal.
