Orange ist zurück erobert und die Christen unter Führung des Markgrafen erwarten die zweite Schlacht auf dem Feld von Alischanz. Rennewart hat zu Beginn des 7. Buches zum zweiten und dritten Mal seine Stange vergessen. Beschämt und darüber nachsinnend, warum ihm das Schicksal solchermaßen mitspielt, kehrt er nach Orange zurück, um sie zu holen. Auf dem Rückweg trifft er am pitît punt das fliehende Reichsheer. Die Ritter hatten den Kampf eingestellt, da dieser ihrer Meinung nach für sie schon mit der Befreiung von Orange erfüllt war. Erst auf das Bitten Willehalms hin, um Christi Willen den Kampf fortzusetzen, hatten sie das Kreuz genommen und weitergekämpft. Die Haltung der Reichsfürsten spiegelt die Haltung des Königs wieder. Wie Loys mussten auch sie erst zum Kampf gedrängt werden, um die Pflichten, die sie mit dem Kreuz auf sich genommen hatten, zu erfüllen. Beim Anblick des Heidenlagers jedoch verlässt sie der Mut und sie kehren um. Dadurch beschämen sie das Reich und das Kreuz gleichermaßen. Willehalm hält daraufhin eine Rede an die Zurückgebliebenen und verheißt diesen einen ewigen Lohn im Himmel: Die durchbohrte Hand Christi werde sie nicht abweisen. Die Reichsfahne wird eingeholt und durch die Willehalms ersetzt, der sein Heer in fünf Scharen einteilt. Nur eine hant vol Männer vermag er dem Riesenheer Terramers entgegenzustellen. Rennewart zwingt das Reichsheer am pitît punt mit seiner Stange zur Umkehr. Er wütet so gründlich unter ihnen, dass einige von ihnen glauben, ein Gottesgericht sei über sie gekommen. Erst als die Ritter ihre Flucht bereut haben und geloben, ihm zu folgen, beendet
