Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,0, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Germanistische Literaturwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar, 12 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Schon von Anfang an erfreute sich das Drama Wilhelm Tell einer außerordentlichen Beliebtheit beim Publikum. Den gelungenen Einstieg der Uraufführung in Weimar konnte nur noch eine Aufführung in Berlin am 4. Juli 1804 übertrumpfen. Die Kapazitäten der Theater schienen dem überdurchschnittlich starken Andrang nicht gerecht werden zu können, so dass einige Wiederholungen nötig waren, um die Neugierde des Publikums zu befriedigen. [Safranski, Friedrich Schiller, S. 505.] Begeistert äußerte sich auch August Wilhelm Schlegel zu Schillers Drama, der sich eine Aufführung "im Angesicht von Tells Kapelle am Ufer des Vierwaldstätter- Sees, unter freiem Himmel, die Alpen zum Hintergrunde" [Zit. nach Safranski, Friedrich Schiller, S. 505.] wünschte. Woher rührt diese allgemeine Verehrung des Stückes? Seinen Ursprung hat der Wilhelm Tell-Stoff in einer Überlieferung des dänischen Geschichtsschreibers Saxo Grammaticus aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Bereits im 15. Jahrhundert galt die Geschichte des Wilhelm Tell als Inbegriff des Schweizer Befreiungskampfes gegen die Habsburger Fremdherrschaft und wurde mit der Gründung der Eidgenossenschaft verbunden. Mit den Befreiungskriegen der Jahre 1813-1815 und der Märzrevolution von 1848 wurde das Schillerdrama auch in Deutschland zum Sinnbild der Freiheit. Abgesehen von dem Verbot des Stückes für den Unterricht durch Adolf Hitler 1941 [Schulz, Wilhelm Tell, S. 217-226.], erfreut sich das Stück bis heute noch großer Beliebtheit, prägt es doch den deutschen Schulunterricht wie kein zweites Schillerdrama.
