Claus Georg Krieger definiert Freiarbeit als eine Form des Unterrichts, welche durch entsprechende Differenzierungsmaßnahmen innerhalb des Unterrichts zu einer individuellen Gestaltung der Lernprozesse der Schüler beiträgt und einen großen Freiraum hinsichtlich des selbstständigen Lernens bietet. Darüber hinaus ist die freie Arbeit durch den eigenen inneren Antrieb gekennzeichnet und geschieht unter entsprechenden pädagogischen Bedingungen, ohne dabei direkt vom Lehrer beeinflusst zu werden. Die Freiarbeit ist eine offene Unterrichtsform und hebt sich damit deutlich vom gewohnten Frontalunterricht beziehungsweise gebundenen Unterricht ab. Der Unterschied zum traditionellen Unterricht ist, dass sich die Freiarbeit viel stärker an den Schüler als Individuum richten möchte und dadurch mehr auf die Fähigkeiten und Interessen einzelner Schüler eingeht. Der Schüler hat die Möglichkeit selbst festzulegen, zu welchem Zeitpunkt, er sich mit welchen Inhalten beschäftigen möchte, während sich der herkömmliche Schulunterricht an einem festen Lehrplan orientiert und alle Schüler zur gleichen Zeit, die gleichen Inhalte lernen. Die Freiarbeit hat das Ziel, sich dem individuellen Entwicklungsstand eines jeden Kindes anzupassen und dementsprechend Lernwelten zu bieten, in denen nach eigenem Lerntempo und eigenen Interessen gearbeitet werden kann. In der Zeit der Freiarbeit kann jeder Schüler seine Themen und die entsprechenden Materialien selbst wählen und ebenso festlegen, in welcher Reihenfolge er dies tun möchte.
