Inhaltsangabe: Problemstellung: Im Zentrum der kapitalmarktorientierten Rechnungslegung steht die Versorgung von Unternehmensinteressenten mit entscheidungsnützlichen Informationen. Diese Informationen sollen dem Adressaten die Möglichkeit geben, zukünftige Zahlungen zwischen ihm und dem Unternehmen abschätzen zu können. Zu den zentralen Eigenschaften der Entscheidungsnützlichkeit gehören die untereinander konfliktären Kriterien der Entscheidungserheblichkeit (relevance) und der Verlässlichkeit (reliability). Wertrelevanz-Untersuchungen (value relevance studies) haben die empirische Operationalisierung dieser beiden Kriterien zum Gegenstand. Eine Jahresabschlussgröße ist beispielsweise wertrelevant, wenn ein signifikanter Zusammenhang zwischen dem Börsenkurs (abhängige Variable) und dieser Jahresabschlussgröße (unabhängige Variable) festgestellt wird. Im Laufe der letzten 10 Jahre der empirischen Rechnungslegungsforschung haben sich value relevance-Untersuchungen als eines der Hauptgebiete herauskristallisiert. Sie finden Anwendung bei dem Vergleich von verschiedenen Rechnungslegungssystemen als ganzes oder einzelnen Bilanzierungsmethoden, jeweils bezogen auf die Fähigkeit entscheidungsnützliche Informationen zu liefern. Der value relevance-Ansatz findet bei der Bearbeitung dieser Aufgabenstellungen so weite Verbreitung, weil er dort eine genaue Messung möglich machen soll, wo die traditionelle, argumentative Vorgehensweise an ihre Grenzen stößt. Anschließend sollen die Ergebnisse in den Entscheidungsprozess der Standardsetzer einfließen. Die value relevance-Forschung ist ein Gebiet, das sich durch kontroverse Diskussionen und gegensätzliche Meinungen auszeichnet.
