Seit den ersten Aufführungen im 17. Jahrhundert hat sich Oper und seine Aufführungspraxis deutlich geändert. Oper ist heute ein Spektakel geworden, das im Fernsehen, auf öffentlichen Plätzen und in Kinos statt findet. Nachdem es völlig normal geworden ist, dass Oper auf DVDs und im Fernsehen zu bestaunen ist, zeigt sich Oper seit kurzer Zeit in einem neuen, völlig ungewohnten Kontext: immer mehr Opernhäuser übertragen einzelne Inszenierung live an einen anderen Ort. Wie jede neue Technologie hat auch Public Viewing einen Einfluss auf die Gesellschaft und bewirkt womöglich "eine Ausweitung des Körpers und des Bewusstseins." (McLuhan) Welche gesellschaftliche Relevanz dahinter stecken muss, zeigt sich schon daran, dass selbst die Bild-Zeitung mehrfach über "Oper für alle", wie einige Opernhäuser ihre Public Viewing Veranstaltungsreihen nennen, berichtet hat. Wenn Oper den Saal verlässt und es auf einmal eine ungewohnte Aufmerksamkeit gegenüber Oper gibt, heißt das dann, dass wir es mit einer neue Öffentlichkeit zu tun haben? Diese soziologisch-medientheoretische Arbeit soll ein paar Überlegungen zu dem Thema Public Viewing aufwerfen und sich mit seinen unterschiedlichen Aspekten beschäftigen. Dabei geht es im Kern um die Frage, welchen Einfluss das neue Medium Public Viewing im Opernbereich auf die Rezeption von Oper und auf das Rezeptionssetting haben könnte. Es soll versucht werden, über literarische Umwege, z.B. Überlegungen zum Medium Kamera und Fragen, wie sich Kunstwerke durch eine Reproduktion verändern, Verbindungen zu Public Viewing herzustellen. Dabei will sich diese Arbeit von einer Konsumkritik fern halten. Public Viewing soll hier kein Anzeichen für die Ökonomisierung aller Lebensberei
