Der Erfolg oder Misserfolg, des Börsenganges, ist entscheidend für die Zukunft des Unternehmens. Die Einbeziehung von Aktien stellt ein Unternehmen auf eine breitere Eigenkapitalbasis. Ein Vorteil für den Börsengang, auch Initial public offering oder going public genannt, ist der schnelle Wachstum und ein besserer Bestand im internationalen Wettbewerb. Dieser Schritt sollte daher auch nur dann getan werden, wenn das Unternehmen auch ausreichend dafür gerüstet und das Marktumfeld günstig ist. Ist das Unternehmen personell und strukturell noch nicht gefestigt, kann die Vorbereitung des Börsengangs dazu führen, dass das operative Geschäft leidet und dadurch die Attraktivität des Unternehmens für den Anleger. Unternehmen arbeiten generell mit zwei Finanzierungsarten. Das Eigenkapital und das Fremdkapital. Das Eigenkapital trägt im speziellen Maß das unternehmerische Risiko, dementsprechend sind die Verzinsungserwartungen der Investoren hoch. Ein Finanzierungsmix, indem Eigen- und Fremdkapital individuell gewichtet sind, führen langfristig zu niedrigen Kapitalkosten. Börsennotierte Unternehmen sind in der Öffentlichkeit wesentlich präsenter als andere Unternehmen. Medien berichten über die Unternehmensentwicklung und die Narichtenagenturen wirken als Multiplikatoren für das Unternehmen. Die Präsenz in den Medien steigert allerdings auch das Interesse an Neukunden. Eine Börsennotierung verbessert die Kreditwürdigkeit, denn Kreditgeber können bei der Bonitätsprüfung auf ein höheres Eigenkapital zugreifen.
