Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird die Effizienz non-monetärer Anreize sowie ihr Risiko in Form von unethischem Verhalten durch Akteure erforscht. Unternehmen setzen monetäre bzw. non-monetäre Anreize dazu ein, die Motivation und Leistung ihrer Mitarbeiter zu steigern und ihren Beitrag an der Wertschöpfung im Unternehmen zu erhöhen. Anreize können demnach ein effizientes Mittel für Unternehmen sein, um die Ziele der Mitarbeiter an Unternehmenszielen auszurichten. Sie stellen Belohnungen dar, die Mitarbeiter bei erfolgreicher Arbeitsleistung erreichen können. Monetäre Anreize können Geldanreize sein wie z.B. ein fixer Geldbetrag pro verkaufter Produkt- oder Dienstleistungseinheit. Diese Praxis ist u.a. bei Banken und Versicherungsunternehmen bekannt, die ihre Angestellten leistungsabhängig bezahlen und ihnen pro eröffnetes Kundenkonto bzw. pro verkaufte Versicherung einen finanziellen Bonus anbieten. Unter non-monetären oder symbolischen Anreizen versteht man Motivation nicht-materieller Natur wie etwa soziale Kommunikation (d.h. Lob und Tadel von Arbeitskollegen), Auszeichnungen (wie etwa "Mitarbeiter des Monats", Medaillen, Schilder) aber auch "sozialer Druck von anderen Menschen" (Falk/Ichino, 2006: 54). Sozialen Druck kann ein Arbeitgeber auf seine Arbeitnehmer ausüben, indem er z.B. einem Team einen Bonus non- monetärer Art nur dann gewährt, wenn jedes Teammitglied eine bestimmte Anforderung erfüllt (z.B. einen Monat lang pünktlich zur Arbeit erscheint). Da das Abweichen eines einzigen Individuums dazu führen würde, dass auch alle anderen Teammitglieder den Bonus nicht erhalten und in Folge dessen eine negative Haltung gegenüber dem "Abweichler" annehmen würden, verspürt jeder Einzelne diesen sozialen Druck und ist daher motiviert, die Anforderung zu erfüllen und sein Ansehen in der Gruppe nicht zu verlieren.
